Extra-Heavy Mattress with Limited Sizes

Stearns & Foster Lakeridge is a medium-firm hybrid mattress. It’s available exclusively through Costco (which requires a paid membership). Lakeridge features a moisture-wicking top cover, gel foam, and a proprietary ventilation system.

However, Lakeridge has poor edge support, is extremely heavy, and is only available in limited sizes. The mattress doesn’t come with a sleep trial and has only an industry-average 10-year warranty. It also lacks the advanced features we would expect at a price point of $1,199 for a queen size.

Competitor mattress Logan & Cove Choice offers a better sleep experience. At just $999 for a queen size, Choice offers zoned support and advanced cooling technologies—plus a 365-night sleep trial, 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle with your purchase.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Costco offers free shipping and “white-glove” delivery service, which includes mattress placement, setup, and removal of all packaging materials. Free shipping is ideal if you can’t bring a mattress home in your vehicle. Stearns & Foster Lakeridge is also an extremely heavy mattress (127 lb for a queen size and 165 lb for a king size), so you may not even be able to transport it yourself.

It’s worth noting that Costco estimates delivery will take 10–15 business days, including time taken to dispatch your order. This may not be ideal if you need a new bed immediately. At the time of writing, there’s currently a “quick ship” promotion that cuts this timeline down to 3–10 days, but that promotion may not be available to all customers.

While Stearns & Foster offers a sleep trial, Costco doesn’t. You can only use Costco’s standard return policy instead of a sleep trial. If you want to return your mattress after purchase, you may need to bring it to the store yourself—Costco only provides return pickup for mattresses purchased online. Even this pickup takes several weeks to arrange.

Finally, Stearns & Foster Lakeridge is covered by the manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. In comparison, similar brands like Logan & Cove offer a 15-year warranty, as well as free delivery, a 365-night sleep trial, free pickups and returns, and a full refund if you aren’t satisfied with your mattress.

No

No

Stearns & Foster Lakeridge is designed with a foam comfort system layered over an innerspring support core. This gives it a total of 5 layers, which have unknown thicknesses and densities.

  • Layer 1: The gel foam comfort layer contours to your body’s shape, relieves pressure, and helps keep you cool during the night.
  • Layer 2: The memory foam layer adds extra comfort. Because it’s below the cooling top layer, you may not notice the overheating that’s often associated with memory foam.
  • Layer 3: This is the thickest foam layer, but it’s not clear what type of foam it’s made of. This layer doesn’t appear in the construction diagram shown on the Costco website.
  • Layer 4: This layer is made up of packed coils that support your body while you sleep. It’s not clear how many coils there are or what type of metal they’re composed of.
  • Layer 5: The foam support layer helps provide structure for all the layers above. A mattress’s support layer often has a higher foam density than other layers, but we weren’t able to determine material or density for Lakeridge.

The button-tufted pillow top is made from materials normally found in athletic wear, like rayon and polyester, and is meant to resist moisture. The cover may also contain Tencel™ fibres, but this wasn’t listed in the law label on the mattress purchased for this review. This likely means that only a limited amount of Tencel™ is present. The cover is not removable or machine washable, so any spills and stains have to be spot-cleaned only.

The bottom of the mattress also has a unique ventilation system for breathability. However, neither Stearns & Foster nor Costco makes it clear exactly how this system works. In fact, it’s difficult to find any reliable, in-depth information about the composition of the Stearns & Foster Lakeridge mattress.

On the other hand, competing brands like Logan & Cove are clear about important details like layer thickness, coil count, and materials. Information on the Logan & Cove mattresses is readily available through the brand’s website, as well as their customer support lines.

Mattress Performance Results

4.3 /10

Edge Support

When tested by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Stearns & Foster Lakeridge earned a below-average score of 4.3/10 for edge support. You may have trouble sitting on the edge of this mattress or sleeping farther away from the middle.

(If you sit on the edge of your mattress, you may prefer Logan & Cove Choice with its edge support score of 7.5/10.)

6.3 /10

Motion Isolation

Stearns & Foster Lakeridge received an above-average motion isolation score of 6.3/10. This means you shouldn’t feel small adjustments or movements coming from a partner or pet, but you may feel larger disruptions from across the bed.

(Want a more undisturbed sleep? Logan & Cove Choice earned a score of 7.5 for motion isolation, and quiets movements across the mattress throughout the night.)

3.7 /10

Bounce

Hybrid mattresses tend to be bouncier because of their innerspring systems. However, the Lakeridge mattress had a surprisingly low bounce score of 3.7/10. This score may help make up for Lakeridge’s missing motion isolation points, but you might feel “stuck” in this mattress when lying down.

(Want a little extra bounce in your mattress? Logan & Cove Choice has you covered with a bounce score of 5.8/10.)

4.7 /10

Cooling Features

The Stearns & Foster Lakeridge mattress is a hybrid mattress advertised as having some cooling features, including its “PrimaCool Performance Fabric” and its “Airvent System.” These technologies aren’t well-explained by the company or Costco. This mattress earns points for its:

  1. Moisture-resistant cover, which can offer some cooling properties
  2. Gel foam that makes the mattress cool to the touch and draws heat away from the body
  3. Pocketed spring coils that allow for increased air circulation
  4. Ventilation system, which enhances airflow

The Stearns & Foster Lakeridge has a good amount of cooling features. However, if you’re looking for a similar level of cooling at a more affordable price, consider Logan & Cove Choice.

With a moisture-wicking top cover infused with cooling nanofibres, a layer of cooling gel foam, and zoned pocketed coils for airflow, Choice offers more advanced cooling features in every layer. Choice is available at just $999 for a queen size, compared to $1,199 for Stearns & Foster (not including the price you also pay for your Costco membership).

Company Background

“A+”

“Poor”

Stearns & Foster began in 1846 as an upholstery manufacturer for horse-drawn carriages, specializing in the cotton padding and wadding that filled carriage seats. After establishing itself in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company expanded into producing high-end mattresses for hotels.

In 1944, Stearns & Foster expanded their manufacturing into Canada, opening a factory in Saint-Narcisse, Québec. In 1993, Stearns & Foster merged with Sealy (formerly the Ohio Mattress Company). As of 2022, the company says that all of its Stearns & Foster-brand mattresses are individually hand-assembled over the course of a day, typically by teams of four people. Only one person’s signature is found on each mattress.

Stearns & Foster is part of Tempur Sealy International, Incorporated. Tempur Sealy maintains an “A+” rating on the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which is in direct contrast to its current 1.08/5 customer review score and over 700 complaints. Common customer complaints include premature sagging, mattresses feeling too firm or soft , and customer service issues.

The company has very few customer reviews on Trustpilot and is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot, with a 2.7/5-star rating at the time this review was written. The limited number of reviews makes it hard to know whether customers will receive a well-made product backed by a trustworthy company and return policy.

Should You Buy Stearns & Foster Lakeridge?

Stearns & Foster Lakeridge offers good motion isolation, but falls short on edge support. The mattress doesn’t come with a sleep trial, has only an industry-standard warranty, and has received customer complaints about premature sagging and an overly firm feel.

Consider Logan & Cove instead. Logan & Cove Choice has a medium-firm feel that’s ideal for any type of sleeper. It features luxury details, zoned support, and advanced cooling technologies like a cooling nanofibre cover and cooling gel foam. You’ll also get a 365-night sleep trial, 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle.

Logan & Cove Choice also has 4,500+ five-star reviews to help give you peace of mind. The company is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” on the BBB, proving both customers and the company stand behind their products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Stearns & Foster mattresses good?

Stearns & Foster is a well-known brand, and buying through Costco means a flexible return policy that many customers appreciate. However, the Lakeridge mattress fell short in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). It lacks edge support, it doesn’t come with a sleep trial, and many customers report that it’s considerably firmer than advertised, with unwanted sagging over time.

We think you’ll prefer Logan & Cove Choice, which comes with a 365-night trial to ensure it’s the perfect fit. Our top pick for Best Hybrid Mattress, Choice is equipped with a moisture-wicking top cover, a layer of cooling gel foam, up to 1,152 coils divided into a zoned support system, and a reinforced perimeter to help support you on the edge of the mattress. Your purchase also includes a free bedding bundle with a mattress protector, pillow(s), pillow protector(s), and a 100% cotton sheet set.

Is Stearns and Foster Lakeridge machine washable?

No. Like all Stearns and Foster mattresses, Lakeridge has a mattress pad that can only be spot cleaned.

Are Stearns & Foster mattresses good for back pain?

Stearns & Foster Lakeridge has a few features that might help with back pain, such as body-contouring gel foam and a coil count of up to 2,264 coils (in a king size). Higher coil counts are often associated with responsiveness and pressure relief. However, these coils aren’t divided into zones for greater support beneath your core. Reviews on Costco’s website mention the mattress sagging soon after purchase, which has caused back pain rather than preventing it. Lakeridge may not be the best choice to solve your back pain issues or offer the support you need.

Do Stearns & Foster mattresses have fiberglass?

Stearns & Foster mattresses made in Canada are made without fiberglass. Fiberglass is a common fire safety feature in mattresses sold outside of Canada, especially less expensive ones. It can be a significant health hazard if fiberglass breaches a mattress cover. Stearns & Foster instead uses a fire barrier made from polyester and rayon.

What kind of physical support does the Stearns and Foster Lakeridge require?

According to Stearns and Foster, its mattresses are meant for use with a raised foundation. Power foundations, flat foundations, and platform beds are all described as compatible. The company explicitly warns against using a box spring or simply letting the mattress rest on the floor.

What does the Stearns & Foster Lakeridge’s warranty cover?

Stearns and Foster offers a 10-year limited warranty covering the company’s mattresses and flat foundations. This warranty covers faulty workmanship and materials, but does not cover used mattresses that are re-sold, mattresses sold through an unauthorized re-seller, or mattresses that have been torn, ripped, or stained after purchase. The warranty also does not cover mildew or mold unless discovered within 30 days of purchase.

Does Sealy own Stearns & Foster?

Stearns & Foster and Sealy are both owned by Tempur Sealy International, Incorporated. Tempur Sealy was formed from a merger of Tempur-Pedic and Sealy in 2012. Prior to this, Sealy purchased the Stearns & Foster brand in 1993.

Are Stearns & Foster mattresses made in Canada?

Stearns & Foster manufactures most of its products in the United States. However, according to the Costco website’s product page, the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress is produced in Canada. Stearns & Foster has a factory in Saint-Narcisse, Québec.

How long does a Stearns and Foster mattress last?

Stearns and Foster (and Costco, by association) offers a 10-year limited warranty for its mattress products, which suggests this is the lifetime of a typical mattress. However, some Stearns and Foster mattress reviews online have indicated that the mattress might not reliably meet that timeline.

What Stearns & Foster mattress alternatives should I consider?

If you’re looking for a comfortable hybrid mattress that offers robust support, consider Logan & Cove Choice. At just $999 for a queen size, Logan & Cove is more affordable than Lakeridge while offering more advanced features like cooling nanofibres, zoned support, and breathable latex-like foam. Choice also performed better than Lakeridge for both edge support and motion isolation.

Logan & Cove comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle—something you won’t get when buying a mattress from Costco.
