Product Details
Simmons Gel Memory Foam is an 8″ foam mattress with a firm feel. It features 3 layers of foam, including a support layer that is relatively thin compared to other foam mattresses. This means that the mattress may offer minimal plushness and sink, limiting the amount of pressure-point relief and comfort.
It has excellent edge support and very good motion isolation, but very low bounce. Simmons Gel Memory Foam also lacks advanced cooling features and is only available in twin to queen size.
The mattress cover is made from a blend of 72% polyester and 28% micro-polyamide, a polymer-like microfiber that’s blended with elastane. The cover has a zipper, but the law label does not state whether or not the cover is machine washable. To avoid damaging the mattress cover, we recommend spot-cleaning it only.
In Canada, the mattress is available online via Costco and retailers like Amazon. If purchased from Costco, brand availability and pricing can vary depending on which Costco you shop at. Shipping time is longer than average for a bed-in-a-box mattress, which can be inconvenient if you need a new mattress quickly. You also need a paid Costco membership to buy a mattress there.
Ideal For: Back Sleepers, Stomach Sleepers

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Shipping and delivery service will vary according to the retailer you purchase this mattress from. If you purchase it through Costco, you’ll need a valid membership to purchase. You’ll get free shipping and delivery if you order online, but this option isn’t available if you purchase in-store.
Costco ships via UPS or FedEx. The mattress should arrive in 2–10 business days with Costco’s “quick ship” promotion. However, this offer may not be available for all customers, depending on your location and the time you purchase this mattress. If you live in a remote area, the package may be held at a local store for pickup, which you’ll have to arrange yourself.
The sleep trial for this mattress varies depending on where you purchase it. Costco doesn’t offer a sleep trial for Simmons Gel Memory Foam. You can instead expect Costco’s return policy, which will provide free return shipping if you buy it online. The return process will take 3–4 weeks. If you purchased it in-store, you will need to bring the mattress back to the store yourself and return it to customer service.
If you purchase your Simmons mattress from a different retailer such as Amazon or National Mattress Outlet, you will be subject to their return/exchange policies, which can be more restrictive.
The Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress comes with an industry-standard 10-year warranty, which covers manufacturing defects only. Further details about Simmons’ warranty policy are unclear as they are not readily available on Costco’s site, and Simmons’ Canadian website was still under construction at the time this review was written.
In comparison, competing mattress Juno comes with a 120-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty. Juno also offers free return pickup with a full refund if you aren’t completely satisfied.
Shop Juno for a 120-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty.

Simmons Mattress Construction
The Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress stands 8″ tall and has 3 layers. All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer of the Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress is 2″ of cooling gel-infused foam. This layer conforms to your body’s shape while you’re lying down, and actively dissipates heat from your body.
- Layer 2: The second (transition) layer is 2″ of polyurethane foam. This layer stops you from feeling the denser support layer beneath. Costco’s product page describes this as a “motion separation” layer, but it’s not clear what this means.
- Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 4″ of polyurethane foam. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk, and prevents you from sinking too deeply into it when lying down. This support layer is somewhat thin, even considering that the mattress is only 8″ tall.
The mattress cover is 72% polyester and 28% micro-polyamide, which is a blend of elastane and microfibers similar to polyester. Although this cover has a zipper, the law label doesn’t indicate whether or not the cover is machine washable. To be safe, we recommend only spot-cleaning any spills or stains.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.
7.0 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Simmons had a deflection of only 1.8″ when laid on, contributing to its 7.0/10 firmness score.
This is much firmer than the “Medium” description on Costco Canada’s product page. You might find a firm feel comfortable if you’re a back or stomach sleeper. However, if you sleep on your side, you might notice added pressure on your shoulder and hip.
(If you sleep on your side or with a partner, you might prefer a mattress with a medium-firm feel. Juno has a firmness score of 6.0/10, making it ideal for all sleep styles.)
8.3 /10
Edge Support
Foam mattresses often don’t have good edge support. However, Simmons had a deflection of just 4″ from a sitting position, resulting in an excellent edge support score of 8.3/10. Simmons will give you very good support when you sit on the edge of the bed, or when you sleep farther away from the middle of the mattress.
7.7 /10
Motion Isolation
Foam mattresses tend to have better motion isolation than other mattress types. Simmons tested 7.7/10 for motion isolation, a very good score for an all-foam mattress. You’ll notice very little movement when your partner changes sleep positions.
3.1 /10
Bounce
Simmons tested 3.1/10 for bounce. A score this low is common for a foam mattress. This is good news if you’re a light sleeper who wakes up easily and needs a more consistent sleep surface.
(Looking for a mattress with even less bounce? Juno earned a bounce score of 2.5/10, giving you the undisturbed rest you deserve.)
1.2 /10
Cooling Features
Simmons Gel Memory Foam isn’t advertised as a cooling mattress, and only has a single cooling feature. This mattress earns points for its:
- Layer of gel-infused foam in the comfort layer, which actively dissipates heat
If you want a budget mattress that does more to help you sleep cool, consider Juno. It comes with a layer of cooling gel foam and an optional Cool+ cover upgrade for a cooler, more comfortable night’s sleep—all for just $499 for a queen size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Simmons mattresses good?
The Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress performed well in third-party engineer testing. However, it doesn’t come with cooling features or an at-home sleep trial, and its 10-year warranty is only industry-standard.
We think you should consider Juno instead. Priced at just $499 for a queen size, Juno offers a layer of cooling gel-infused foam and an optional Cool+ cover upgrade to keep you from sleeping hot. Juno also comes with a 120-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty, with free return pickup service.
Does Simmons still make mattresses?
Yes, Simmons continues to make mattresses. Its parent company, Serta Simmons Bedding, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early 2023 and completed financial restructuring later that year. Simmons mattresses are available for purchase through retailers like Costco and Amazon.
Does Costco sell a Simmons mattress?
At the time this review was published, Costco sells the Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress. However, with Simmon’s Canadian website being non-functional at the time of this review, it’s unclear if other Simmons products will become available at retailers like Costco in the future.
What’s the Simmons mattress warranty?
The Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress comes with an industry-standard 10-year manufacturer’s limited warranty. This warranty covers defects in workmanship and material only.
Do Simmons mattresses have fiberglass?
No, Simmons mattresses made in Canada don’t have fiberglass. Fiberglass is a common fire safety feature in mattresses made in countries like the United States and China. By federal Canadian law, however, mattresses made in Canada may not contain fiberglass.
What Simmons mattress alternatives should I consider?
We think you should check out Juno. Available at just $499 for a queen size, Juno has a medium-firm feel that’s ideal for all sleep styles. Juno is also available in a wider range of sizes, including including twin XL, king, California king, and RV sizes. Its layer of cooling gel and optional Cool+ cover upgrade are also great if you’re a hot sleeper. With a 120-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty, Juno offers more value for its price.
Best of all, your purchase also comes with a free build-your-own bedding bundle that comes with a mattress protector, your choice of pillow(s), and a bonus item like a duvet or sheet set.
