Flippable Mattress Costs More For Canadians

Layla Memory Foam is an all-foam mattress from the American company Layla Sleep. It features copper-infused cooling gel, a cooling cover, and a flippable design that lets you choose between “Soft” and “Firm” sleeping surfaces.

A queen-size Layla mattress costs $1,572 CAD (subject to USD exchange rates). However, Canadian customers end up paying even more due to a $250 USD non-refundable shipping fee. Layla’s website also doesn’t state a currency, so it’s not clear that you’re paying USD until after you’ve bought the mattress.

Compared to competing foam mattresses like Douglas, Layla’s 120-night sleep trial is only slightly above industry standard. And while a flippable firmness option is an interesting idea, the mattress’s performance per side isn’t different enough to justify the higher-than-average cost of this mattress.

Layla mattress delivery box

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Layla ships using FedEx. No matter what size of mattress you order, Layla charges a $250 USD fee for shipping to Canada.

The company’s FAQ gives a shipping timeline of 4–10 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. However, this information was not specific to Canada. International shipping timelines are usually longer, so you might end up waiting longer to receive your mattress.

After buying your Layla mattress, you’ll have 120 nights to decide whether you want to keep it. You can then return it for a full refund. However, Layla won’t refund the $250 shipping fee. It’s also unclear whether you’ll have to pay the return shipping costs yourself.

Layla’s memory foam mattress comes with a lifetime warranty. This warranty is somewhat different from the standard warranty offered by other mattress companies, since it specifically covers seams coming apart, sagging greater than 1″, loss of mattress shape, splitting or cracking of the foam, and more than 1″ of lost mattress height.

Yes

Layla Memory Foam stands 10.5″ high and has 4 interior foam layers. All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified.

This mattress is flippable, meaning that the comfort and support layers can be switched whenever you want. The layers listed below presume that the “top” layer is the Soft side of the mattress.

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer is 1.5″ of high-density copper gel memory foam. This layer conforms the most to your body while you’re lying on the mattress, and the copper-infused gel wicks heat away from your body while you’re lying down.
  • Layer 2: The second (transition) layer is 2.5″ of convoluted foam. Layla describes this as an “air flow” layer. This layer makes the mattress more breathable, and prevents you from feeling the denser base layer below.
  • Layer 3: The third (support) layer is 5.5″ of core support foam. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk, and prevents you from sinking too deeply into the mattress while you’re lying on top of it.
  • Layer 4: The bottom layer is 1″ of high-density copper gel memory foam. This is the comfort layer for the mattress’s firm side. While the soft side is being used, it acts as insulation between the rest of the mattress and the foundation.

Layla’s mattress cover is made of 63% polyester, 26% rayon, 6% viscose, and 5% polylycra. Designed to be breathable to help dissipate heat while you’re sleeping, it’s also removable and machine washable.

Mattress Performance Results

Layla mattress firmness showcased by a mannequin laying on top of the mattress and showcasing the deflection

5.5 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Layla’s Soft side had a deflection of 3.5″ when laid on, earning it a firmness score of 5.5/10. This translates to a medium-firm feel, not the soft feel that Layla advertises. Meanwhile, the Firm side has a deflection of 3.3″, earning a firmness score of 5.3/10. This falls into the medium category for firmness—and is in fact softer than the Soft side.

Overall, these firmness scores are extremely close and don’t align with the firmness levels advertised.

(Need a mattress with a firmer feel? Douglas earned a firmness score of 6.7/10. This score places Douglas in the medium-firm category, which is ideal for all sleep styles.)

6.5 /10

Edge Support

Layla’s Soft side had a deflection of 5.7″ from a seated position, only slightly slightly higher than the 5.6″ deflection on the Firm side.

This results in an 6.5/10 edge support score for both sides of the mattress, which is above-average. You shouldn’t sink too much into the sidewalls when sitting on the bed or sleeping farther away from the middle of the mattress.

(Looking for even more edge support? Douglas scored 7.8/10, giving you all the support you need in a mattress.)

8.4 /10

Motion Isolation

Layla’s Soft side earned a motion isolation score of 8.4/10, while its Firm side scored slightly lower at 8.2/10. These scores are very similar. No matter which side of the mattress you sleep on, you won’t notice your partner moving around while you sleep.

3.3 /10

Bounce

Layla’s Soft side earned a bounce score of 3.3/10. In comparison, the Firm side earned a slightly higher score of 3.7/10. Both of these are fairly low scores, and typical for all-foam mattresses. You may notice trouble changing positions and could have some trouble getting up after lying down.

4.1 /10

Cooling Features

Layla comes with dedicated cooling features on both its soft and firm sides to help you sleep without overheating at night. Its cover is designed to be heat dissipating, as are two of its foam layers. This mattress earns points for its:

  1. Breathable, heat-dissipating cover
  2. Copper-infused cooling gel layers to draw heat away from the body
  3. Convoluted foam layer, which helps to make the mattress more breathable

If you’re looking for similar cooling features in a mattress without breaking the bank, consider Douglas Original. Douglas comes with a moisture-wicking cover, cooling gel foam, and breathable Elastex foam, all for just for a queen size. In comparison, Layla costs $1,572 CAD for a queen size—and that’s not including its $250 USD shipping fee.

Should You Buy Layla?

Layla’s flippable construction is a neat idea, but according to third-party engineer testing, you won’t notice much difference in performance with either side. Its price tag and shipping fees are also higher than average for a foam mattress. We recommend Douglas Original instead.

At just $799 for a queen size, Douglas Original comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty. Your purchase also includes a machine-washable cover and a free bedding bundle, giving your new bed lasting value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Layla mattresses good?

Layla mattresses have good performance, but they lack the features you might expect in a foam mattress that costs $1,572 for a queen size. In comparison, Douglas Original comes with cooling features, a machine-washable cover, a 365-night sleep trial, 20-year warranty, and free shipping. You also get a free bedding bundle with your purchase, giving you much more value than Layla for almost half the price—just $799 for a queen size.

How much is a Layla mattress?

Layla’s memory foam mattress has a price range of $1,071–$1,787 CAD. It’s available in sizes ranging from twin to California king. However, even though Layla ships to Canada, be aware that the prices on the company’s website are listed in USD, not CAD.

Where can I buy a Layla mattress in Canada?

You can buy a Layla mattress through the company’s website. However, be aware that the prices listed are in USD, not CAD, and won’t convert to Canadian currency on the store checkout page.

Does Layla Mattress ship to Canada?

Yes, Layla ships to Canada. The company charges a $250 USD shipping fee for all mattresses shipped to Canada.

Does the Layla mattress have fiberglass?

The law label on the Layla mattress we purchased doesn’t list fiberglass, glass fiber, silica fibers, or any similar material. However, at least one independent reviewer has tested and found fiberglass in both the Layla Memory Foam and Layla Hybrid mattress models.

How do you flip a Layla mattress?

No special steps are required when flipping the Layla mattress from the Soft side to its Firm side. According to the company, all you need to do is remove your bedding and flip the mattress. Just be aware that a queen-size Layla mattress weighs 69 lb, so lift with your legs (not your back) to avoid injury.

What Layla mattress alternatives should I consider?

We think you should consider competing mattress Douglas Original. At just $799 for a queen size, Douglas features cooling gel foam, a moisture-wicking cover that’s also machine washable, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty. Best of all, your purchase comes with a free bedding bundle, saving you the hassle and expense of finding new sheets.
