Budget Mattress With Low Value For Customers

IKEA Valevag is a Mexican-made hybrid mattress sold by IKEA. Affordably priced at $449 for a queen size, it features zoned support with its individually wrapped pocket coils, but that’s where the features end.

You can try the IKEA Valevag at home with a 90-night sleep trial. However, it’s important to note that IKEA’s return policy allows only a one-time exchange or store credit rather than a full refund. While the mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, this is only standard for the industry and may not cover all the potential issues that customers have reported.

Numerous customer reviews on IKEA’s website mention issues like sagging, premature wear, and even back pain—sometimes within the first few months of use. Additionally, IKEA is rated “C-” (unaccredited) on Better Business Bureau and “Bad” on Trustpilot, suggesting that customer satisfaction may be a concern.

While IKEA Valevag may seem budget-friendly, options like the Canadian-made Juno offer far greater value. Juno comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle—something you won’t get with an IKEA mattress.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

IKEA ships mattresses across most of Canada via FedEx. Depending on your location, delivery fees start at $39 for contactless doorstep delivery or $59 for in-home delivery.

Valevag comes with a 90-night sleep trial, which is shorter than the sleep trials offered by some competitors. IKEA’s policy only allows a one-time exchange or a store credit refund rather than cash back. If you exchange for a more expensive mattress, you’ll also need to cover the difference.

Returning the mattress doesn’t require re-rolling, but IKEA asks you to protect it during transit using a cover, plastic, or an IKEA mattress bag (available at the delivery counter). Return pick-up service may incur a fee and is done only if the mattress is clean and undamaged.

If you choose to keep Valevag, it’s backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s limited warranty. While this is standard for the industry, competing brands like Juno offer a 15-year warranty, a longer 120-night sleep trial, and the option of a full refund with free return pickup for added value and flexibility.

No

IKEA Valevag stands 9.5″ tall and has 3 visible interior layers of foam and pocketed coils. The foam used in IKEA Valevag is not CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer is 1.5″ of memory foam. This layer provides cushioning so you don’t feel the coils in the transition layer. Foam density: 1.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 6.5″ of pocketed coils. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk and provides a small amount of airflow.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 0.25″ of foam. This foam provides a foundation for the support layer, and insulates the mattress from the bedframe.

The IKEA Valevag mattress cover includes a plush comfort layer that makes up 1.25″ of its height, adding a soft touch—but with some limitations. Made from polypropylene and 100% recycled polyester, the cover has a zipper but isn’t designed to be removed and isn’t machine-washable, which may make it difficult to keep clean over time. IKEA recommends spot-cleaning any stains with upholstery shampoo, which can be less convenient for those with kids or pets.

Additionally, Valevag lacks cooling features, which may be noticeable on warmer nights. Combined with its plush surface, this can lead to heat buildup. If you’re a hot sleeper sensitive to temperature changes, you might find yourself waking up uncomfortably warm.

Mattress Performance Results

6.7 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), IKEA Valevag had a deflection of 2.9″ when laid on, contributing to a 6.7/10 firmness score.

This places the mattress in the medium-firm category, which fits the description of the model we purchased for this review. A medium-firm mattress provides a good balance of comfort and support for all sleep styles.

8.3 /10

Edge Support

IKEA Valevag had a deflection of 3.9″ from a seated position, resulting in a score of 8.3/10 for edge support. This is an excellent rating. You’ll be able to sit on the edge of this mattress with no issues. You also won’t need to worry about falling off the bed if you sleep closer to the edge.

7.4 /10

Motion Isolation

IKEA Valevag earned a 7.4/10 rating for motion isolation, which is a very good score for a hybrid mattress. You shouldn’t notice your partner’s movements while you’re sleeping on this mattress.

2.7 /10

Bounce

IKEA Valevag earned 2.7/10 for bounce. This is an unusually low score, especially for a medium-firm hybrid mattress. You’ll sink into this mattress more than you would on other mattresses, letting it “hug” you a bit more as you lie on it. You may find it somewhat difficult to get up after lying down on IKEA Valevag.

0.6 /10

Cooling Features

IKEA Valevag isn’t a cooling mattress. However, as a hybrid mattress, it has one feature that helps promote cooling. IKEA Valevag earns points for its:

  1. Layer of pocket coils that allow for breathability and airflow

If you need more advanced cooling features in an affordable mattress, you might prefer Juno instead. Juno has a layer of cooling gel foam to reduce heat buildup and promote airflow. It also comes with an optional Cool+ cover made with special cooling yarn, which helps control surface temperatures. Juno offers these enhanced cooling features at a competitive price of $499 for a queen size.

IKEA is a Swedish retailer based in Leiden, Netherlands. Founded by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943, IKEA is now a multinational company and the world’s largest furniture retailer. The first IKEA store opened in southern Sweden in 1958, and the company came to Canada in 1976.

Despite the company’s long reputation and innovative product lines, the company maintains a “C-” (unaccredited) rating on Better Business Bureau based on 1.18/5 stars. IKEA is also rated “Bad” on Trustpilot based on over 25,000 reviews. Many customers complain of issues with customer service, product delivery, and product returns.

Should You Buy IKEA Valevag?

IKEA Valevag performs well as a budget hybrid mattress, with good edge support and motion isolation. But Valevag’s lack of special features, shorter-than-average sleep trial, restrictive return policy, and poor company reviews make it difficult to recommend. Consider Juno instead.

Juno is competitively priced at just $499 for a queen size. It comes with a cooling gel layer, a 120-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and the option of a full refund with easy returns. Your purchase also comes with a free bedding bundle that includes a mattress protector, pillow(s), sheets, and pillow protector(s).

You’ll get more peace of mind when you buy from a company that’s rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot. Juno also has 5,400+ five-star reviews from happy customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are IKEA mattresses good?

IKEA mattresses are a common choice for mattress shoppers on a budget. But IKEA Valevag leaves out features that come standard with less expensive mattresses. For example, Juno has a cooling gel foam layer and CertiPUR-US® certified foams at a competitive price—just $499 for a queen size.

Do IKEA mattresses have fiberglass?

None of the mattresses currently listed on IKEA’s Canadian website list fiberglass in their materials. However, the IKEA Åmsosen mattress (not available in Canada) uses fiberglass in its inner mattress cover.

Does IKEA sell twin XL mattresses?

No. IKEA offers varying size ranges for its mattresses, but it doesn’t currently offer any of its mattresses in twin XL size. If you’re looking for a twin XL budget mattress, Juno is accessibly priced at just $449 for a twin XL.

Do IKEA mattresses have a warranty?

Yes. IKEA mattresses are covered by a 10-year limited warranty that covers defects in manufacturing. This warranty doesn’t cover normal wear and tear, or any accidental damage that an IKEA mattress may receive.

Are IKEA mattresses CertiPUR®-US certified?

The company doesn’t list this certification on its website, which indicates that IKEA mattresses aren’t made using CertiPUR®-US certified foam.

Are IKEA mattresses standard size?

IKEA mattresses come in many of the same sizes as other mattresses sold in Canada. However, IKEA doesn’t sell mattresses in twin XL and California king sizes. In comparison, competitor Juno comes in a full range of mattress sizes, including twin XL and California king. Juno is also available in RV mattress sizes.

Can I return an IKEA mattress?

IKEA allows you to return a mattress within 90 days of purchase for an exchange or a refund. You will be refunded with an IKEA refund card. This card is valid at any IKEA store, as well as IKEA.com, and never expires. However, if you choose to exchange your mattress for a more expensive option, you’ll need to pay the difference.

Can I sleep on an IKEA mattress straight away?

Yes. Once the mattress is unrolled and fully expanded, you can use it right away. IKEA warns that your new mattress may have a “noticeable smell” when opening the packaging. This odour, known as offgassing, isn’t dangerous and disappears over time. It fades away faster if you vacuum or air out the mattress first.

Can I wash an IKEA mattress cover?

IKEA Valevag doesn’t have a machine-washable mattress cover. IKEA recommends that you spot-clean any stains using upholstery shampoo.

Can you flip an IKEA mattress?

That depends on the mattress. IKEA Valevag, like most other modern hybrid mattresses, was not designed to be flipped. The mattress won’t work as intended if it’s upside down.

Can you roll an IKEA mattress back up?

Yes, IKEA Valevag can be re-rolled after unrolling. Before you do, IKEA recommends vacuum-packing the mattress to reduce its thickness as much as possible.

What IKEA mattress alternatives should I consider?

Looking for a quality mattress on a budget? Take a look at Juno. It comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty, as well as a mattress protector and a free bedding bundle. That level of value comes at a competitive price of $499 for a queen size.
