Expensive Cooling Mattress With Difficult Returns

GhostBed Luxe is a Canadian-made premium cooling foam mattress from GhostBed, an American bed-in-a-box company. It features a cooling cover, phase-change material, and gel-infused memory foam. These features come at the premium cost of $3,595 for a queen size, a very high price point for an all-foam mattress.

GhostBed Luxe comes with a 101-night sleep trial, which is only slightly longer than industry average. It also lacks features that give the mattress long-term value, like zoned support or a free bedding bundle.

GhostBed has a very restrictive return policy, which earned the company negative media attention in 2022 on CBC Go Public. In addition, the company requires that customers pay back any discounts on returned mattresses. This means that you may not get any of your money back if you aren’t satisfied.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

GhostBed Luxe ships via FedEx to all parts of Canada. Mattresses ship within 24 hours, according to the company’s website. While this is a fast timeline, it’s likely because products aren’t made to order and are boxed up well in advance. In fact, the GhostBed Luxe mattress we ordered was boxed for roughly 10 months before delivery. Long-term boxed storage can damage a mattress, and GhostBed’s warranty limitations (described below) may not cover that damage.

GhostBed should arrive on your doorstep in 3–5 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. The mattress ships in a cardboard box and is wrapped in plastic for extra protection. GhostBed’s warranty states that it may take 24–48 hours to reach its full size once unboxed. (Note that the warranty also says the mattress may not expand to 100% of its full height.)

You’ll have a 101-night sleep trial to determine whether you want to keep your GhostBed Luxe. This sleep trial begins the day the mattress is shipped to you. However, GhostBed requires that you wait 30 nights before starting a return. The company also charges a restocking fee for returned items, though its Canadian website doesn’t specify how much this fee is or how it is calculated.

Although the company promises hassle-free returns, customer reviews on third-party websites such as Trustpilot and Better Business Bureau claim that the company frequently denies returns. You may also have to pay back any discount that you received when purchasing. This can amount to a refund of nothing, or almost nothing.

GhostBed Luxe comes with a 25-year warranty. This covers any indentation “greater than one (1.0) inch not associated with a sag in the foundation” and “any physical flaw in the mattress causing the material to crack, despite normal usage and proper handling.” The warranty does not cover incidental damage or changes in the mattress’s cooling properties. After 10 years, you’ll also need to pay at least 50% of the original purchase price to replace the mattress under the warranty.

GhostBed Luxe mattress layers

Yes

No

GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam cooling mattress that stands 11″ high and has 3 distinct interior layers. The GhostBed website states that the mattress has numerous other layers, but we don’t count the mattress cover components or phase-change material as unique layers.

All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified. GhostBed doesn’t publicly disclose the densities of the foams used in GhostBed Luxe’s construction.

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer of GhostBed Luxe is 2″ of cooling gel-infused memory foam that’s been treated with a narrow strip of phase-change material. This layer conforms to your body as you lie down on it, and the cooling gel works to dissipate body heat.
  • Layer 2: The second (transition) layer is a 2″ layer of “Ghost Bounce” foam, which stops you from feeling the denser support foam below. It’s also meant to add a slight amount of bounce to the mattress, but the manufacturer doesn’t explain how it achieves this.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 7.5″ of high-density base foam. This dense layer gives the mattress most of its bulk, preventing you from sinking too deeply while you’re lying down.

The mattress’s 1.5″ top cover is mostly polyester, with a small amount of spandex. This cover contains a 0.5″ layer of cooling polyester fibre and another 1″ of cooling gel foam. The cover is removable and machine-washable. However, because the cover contains a compressed layer of foam, it may take longer than expected to fully dry after washing.

Get a cooling mattress with a machine-washable cover for less than half the price.

Mattress Performance Results

photo of a mannequin lying atop a GhostBed Luxe mattress showing a displacement of 30

5.7 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), GhostBed Luxe had a deflection of 3″ when laid on, giving it a 5.7/10 firmness score. This puts it in the medium-firm category, but it’s also very close to medium. This mattress should work with all sleep styles, but may feel a little too soft if you sleep on your side.

(Looking for a mattress that’s a little more firm? Octave Horizon has zoned body support and a firmness rating of 6.0/10, providing ergonomic support to promote proper spinal alignment and targeted relief for key areas so you can enjoy a great night’s sleep.)

7.0 /10

Edge Support

While foam mattresses aren’t typically known for their edge support, GhostBed Luxe’s deflection from a seated position was only 5.2″. This earned it an above-average score of 7.0/10. You should be able to sit on the edge or sleep farther away from the middle without sinking into the sidewalls.

8.4 /10

Motion Isolation

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), GhostBed Luxe scored 8.4/10 for motion isolation. This is an excellent score. You shouldn’t notice your partner’s movements while you’re sleeping on this mattress.

2.9 /10

Bounce

It’s common for mattresses with good motion isolation to have a low bounce score. GhostBed Luxe scored 2.9/10 for bounce, which is a very low score, even for a foam mattress. You might notice difficulty changing sleep positions, or have trouble getting out of bed in the morning.

(If you’re looking for a mattress that’s a little more responsive, consider Octave Horizon, with its bounce score of 3.8/10.)

GhostBed Luxe Cooling Features

4.7 /10

Cooling Features

GhostBed Luxe is marketed as a cooling mattress containing several advanced cooling technologies. This is especially important for mattresses containing memory foam, as memory foam has been known to trap heat. This mattress gains points for its:

  1. Breathable cover, which contains cooling yarn, 0.5″ cooling fibres, and 1″ gel-infused memory foam
  2. Ghost Ice phase-change material, designed to absorb and dissipate body heat throughout the night
  3. 2″ layer of cooling gel-infused memory foam, which adds further heat dissipation

However, GhostBed Luxe also notably lacks several advanced cooling features found in competing mattresses at a lower price point. Octave Horizon, for instance, contains an antimicrobial copper-infused cooling gel foam layer that draws heat away from your body while promoting a cleaner sleep environment and a layer of aerated latex for enhanced air circulation. With Octave, you can enjoy a more refreshing and restorative sleep for less than half the cost of GhostBed Luxe.

Company Background

“C-” (unaccredited)

“Bad”

GhostBed’s parent company, Nature’s Sleep, was founded in 2001 by Marc Werner. However, the company’s first bed-in-a-box mattress—The GhostBed, now known as GhostBed Classic—didn’t launch until 2015. It was shortly followed by the GhostPillow and other sleep products.

The GhostBed brand is associated with celebrities like Venus Williams who claim to be happy with their GhostBed mattress. Customers, on the other hand, have filed a large number of complaints related to returns and warranty claims. In fact, one customer’s negative experience with GhostBed’s return policy was highlighted on CBC Go Public.

At the time this review was written, GhostBed is rated “Bad” on Trustpilot. The business also has a “C-” (unaccredited) rating on BBB and a customer review rating of 1.17/5 stars. Common complaints include false advertising, product quality, and difficulty arranging refunds or returns.

One of the most concerning BBB complaints comes from a customer who purchased a mattress on sale. This customer found that if they wanted to return the mattress, they would have to pay for the discounts applied to their order. We have observed GhostBed raising their prices during sales to provide a greater “discount” (see August 2023 vs December 2023), meaning customers have to pay a greater amount to return a mattress purchased on sale.

Most recently, the company issued a recall of the GhostBed Natural line of mattresses in 2024. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that “the mattresses violate the smoldering ignition requirements of the federal mattress flammability regulation, posing a fire hazard.”

Should You Buy GhostBed Luxe?

GhostBed Luxe has good edge support and excellent motion isolation, and it contains advanced cooling technologies. However, it’s also much more expensive than average, and GhostBed has numerous complaints about customer service and returns. We recommend Octave Horizon instead.

At just $1,499 for a queen size, Octave Horizon has many of the same cooling features as GhostBed, as well as copper-infused gel and aerated latex foam. Horizon also comes with zoned support, a risk-free 365-night sleep trial, and a free bedding bundle, giving you premium cooling at an affordable price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are GhostBed mattresses good?

GhostBed mattresses contain some advanced cooling features, but they are much more expensive than the average mattress. The company’s return policy is also very restrictive, and customers are required to pay back any discount they receive.

We think you should check out Octave Horizon instead. At $1,499 for a queen size, Horizon packs in even more advanced cooling technology so you can enjoy an undisturbed and refreshing sleep for half the price of Ghostbed Luxe.

It has a moisture-wicking cover with the most cooling nanofibres of any Octave mattress, cooling gel foam and ventilated support foam for heat dissipation, aerated latex foam for enhanced air circulation, and phase-change material that adapts to seasonal temperature changes. It also comes with a generous 365-night sleep trial, free return pickup with full refunds, and a free bedding bundle with your purchase.

Where is GhostBed made?

GhostBed manufactures its mattresses in the United States and central Canada.

Where can I try a GhostBed?

GhostBed has partnered with several retailers in the United States (such as American Mattress and Sam’s Club) and Canada (such as Dufresne and Rody’s Retail) who offer the chance to try GhostBed mattresses in their showrooms. However, there are relatively few showrooms in Canada with GhostBed mattresses, and a showroom may not have a specific GhostBed mattress in stock.

Does GhostBed need a box spring?

No, you don’t need a box spring to use a GhostBed mattress. According to the company, any “sturdy foundation” will work with its mattresses.

How long does GhostBed take to expand?

According to the company’s website FAQ, the mattress will expand immediately once it’s unboxed. However, the GhostBed warranty states that a compressed mattress may take 24–48 hours to expand fully, and “may not recover to 100% of their total height.”

How do you return a GhostBed?

GhostBed lets customers return their mattresses after the first 30 nights of the 101-night sleep trial. Returns may be initiated on the company’s website. If you cancel or return an order, a restocking fee plus return freight will be deducted from your refund. Restocking fees are not specified on the company’s Canadian website.

The company has also received negative press for its return policy and customer service, in contrast to its claim of “hassle-free returns.” The company also requires you to pay back any discount you received on your mattress, which could mean that your refund amounts to nothing. In fact, you may end up owing money as part of your return.

Is GhostBed worth it?

GhostBed mattresses have good features and come with a longer-than-average warranty, but they’re much more expensive than many similar mattresses. In addition, GhostBed’s 101-night sleep trial is only slightly longer than the industry average. Most importantly, the company has received a large number of negative customer reviews and press coverage related to their return policies and customer service.

What GhostBed mattress alternatives should I consider?

If you’re looking for a premium cooling mattress so you can enjoy undisturbed sleep without a high price tag, consider Octave Horizon. It’s designed with copper-infused cooling gel foam, aerated latex foam, and a cooling nanofibre cover to help you enjoy a clean and refreshing sleep environment. Octave also comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a free bedding bundle, all for just $1,499 for a queen size—less than half the price of GhostBed Luxe.

The company is also rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot, compared to GhostBed’s significantly lower ratings. These third-party review websites give you a good picture of what to expect when you buy a mattress. This means many customers are satisfied with their experience buying an Octave.
