Decent Memory Foam Mattress, Poor Service Reviews

Emma Original is a memory foam mattress that comes in a single medium firmness. The Emma website advertises that it’s made in the US, but the label on the mattress we purchased says it was made in Mexico.

Although Emma’s website has thousands of customer reviews mainly from Europe, there are fewer than 40 customer reviews from Canadian customers. Furthermore, consumer reviews on third-party websites like Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot raise concerns about the company’s customer service practices.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Various couriers will ship Emma Original directly to your door, anywhere in Canada. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations. The mattress is made in the United States, and you should receive it within 2–7 business days, including dispatch and delivery time.

Emma Original arrives in a cardboard box. It’s wrapped in multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic for extra protection. After you remove the plastic, Emma Original expands to its full 10″ height in minutes. You can sleep on the mattress the same day it’s delivered.

At 365 nights, Emma’s sleep trial is on par with competing mattress brands like Douglas. Emma will also arrange return pickups for free and issue a full refund within the trial period.

However, the mattress is only supported by a 10-year warranty. Competing brand Douglas offers a considerably longer 20-year warranty.

Yes

The Emma Original mattress measures 10″ tall and has 3 layers of foam. Although the company uses trademark names to describe the mattress’s foam layers, Emma’s website doesn’t explain what actually makes their layers unique. The foam composition seems to be the same as the foam found in competing mattresses.

  • Layer 1: Emma Original’s comfort layer is 2″ of Airgocell® foam. Like cooling gel foam, this layer is designed to offer breathability and absorb your body’s heat to provide good temperature regulation so you can sleep undisturbed throughout the night.
  • Layer 2: The mattress’s transition layer is 2″ of Halo Memory Foam™. It has three zones that offer full-body support. This layer is designed to respond slowly to movement, which provides extra motion isolation. It also contours to your body’s shape, keeps your spine aligned, and provides a “hugging” sensation.
  • Layer 3: Emma Original’s base layer is 6″ of HRX, which stands for high resiliency extra base foam. This bottom layer is the base of the mattress and gives the Emma Original its structure. It also prevents you from sinking too deep into the mattress.

Emma Original has a machine-washable top cover made from a polyester and elastane fabric blend. The cover is soft to the touch but lacks the cooling features of competing foam mattresses like Douglas.

Mattress Performance Results

6.4 /10

Edge Support

Lower edge support is common when looking at foam mattresses. Emma Original provides average edge support for a foam mattress with a score of 6.4/10.

8.4 /10

Motion Isolation

While foam mattresses aren’t known for having good edge support, they make up for it with great motion isolation. Emma Original delivers in this area with a motion isolation score of 8.4/10. This is good news if you share your bed with a partner, kids, or pets.

3.9 /10

Bounce

Since foam mattresses typically provide good motion isolation, they tend to have lower bounce ratings. Emma Original scored 3.9/10 for bounce—an average score for an all-foam mattress.

Looking for a foam mattress with a little less bounce? With a bounce score of 3.1/10, Douglas Original is designed to help you get a more restful sleep.

Cooling Features

Emma Original isn’t promoted as a cooling mattress but is advertised as having one cooling feature. The mattress earns limited points for its:

  1. Layer of Airgocell foam, an undescribed technology with unclear benefits

Emma says this foam “enhances breathability and regulates temperature by absorbing and then evaporating sweat.” However, when we asked Emma’s customer service team for more information, they couldn’t explain what the technology is or how it works.

Looking for a mattress with clearer cooling benefits? Douglas Original comes with a moisture-wicking cover and a layer of cooling gel foam, all at a more accessible price of just $799 for a queen size, compared to $924 for Emma Original.

Want a mattress that’s Canadian-made and has cooling features? Check out Douglas.

“Average”

Launched in 2015, Emma was founded in Frankfurt, Germany. Emma has since expanded and operates in 22 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America. Emma’s mattress selection in Canada includes foam and hybrid mattresses, as well as a range of bedding accessories and an upholstered bed frame.

It hasn’t been completely smooth sailing for Emma. In 2022, The Guardian reported that Emma was being investigated by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) for misleading customers with continuous “sales”. The CMA announced its ruling in July 2023 and described “detailed concerns.”

Judging by negative reviews on Trustpilot, customers are noticing Emma’s sales practices making their way overseas as the company tries to gain traction in Canada. Some Trustpilot reviews have also reported differing quality between Emma mattresses in Canada and in the UK.

In January 2024, Emma had an “F” rating on Better Business Bureau. The company’s profile is now rated “NR” (unaccredited). It’s not clear why the business no longer has an official letter grade on BBB.
