This mattress has very good edge support so you can sit comfortably at the side or foot of the bed. Douglas also has superior motion isolation and low bounce, so you’re less likely to be woken by movement from your partner, kids, or pets.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Douglas uses FedEx to provide free shipping directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations. The order ships by ground from Ontario or Alberta. You should receive your mattress in 2–10 business days, including dispatch and delivery time.
The mattress arrives in a cardboard box roughly the size of a hockey bag and is further protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. Once unrolled, the Douglas fully expands in two minutes and is ready to sleep on the same day it’s delivered.
The 365-night sleep trial is one of the longest in Canada. The company also arranges to pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period, and they’ll issue a full refund if you aren’t completely happy with your purchase.

Douglas Mattress Construction
The Canadian-made Douglas mattress has 3 layers of foam.
- Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
- Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
- Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.
The CoolSense® mattress cover is made of polyester, spandex, and plant-based Infinitex™ fibres that draw moisture away from the surface. The result is a cool, comfortable night’s sleep that you can feel good about.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.
6.7 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Douglas Original scored 6.7/10 for firmness. This falls into the medium-firm category, which is ideal for all sleep styles. A favourite of many Canadians, a medium-firm feel provides balanced comfort and support. Douglas Original gently contours around your body with minimal sinking for a slightly firmer feel.
7.8 /10
Edge Support
Douglas has strong sidewalls that should be able to handle your full body weight. Its edge support rating of 7.8/10 means you can safely sit at the side or foot of the bed without falling off, and it’s easy to get out of bed in the morning.
8.3 /10
Motion Isolation
Foam mattresses are known for good motion isolation, but Douglas is at the top of its class with a 8.3/10. It absorbs movement from other areas of the mattress for an undisturbed sleep. This means you’re less likely to notice when your partner changes position or gets up—or when kids and pets jump into bed with you.
3.1 /10
Bounce
Douglas scored a 3.1/10 for bounce, which is a nice side effect of its best-in-class motion isolation. Low bounce is good news if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken, or if you don’t want any little monkeys jumping on the bed.

Cooling Features
The Douglas Original mattress offers some cooling technologies that adapt to your body’s needs without retaining excessive heat. Douglas Original earns points for its:
- CoolSense® cover that draws moisture away for a cool, dry feel
- Layer of ecoLight® cooling gel foam that allows for enhanced cooling
- Layer of Elastex, a breathable latex-like foam that ensures good air circulation
If you’re looking for an all-around great mattress with the added bonus of cooling features, Douglas Original is an excellent choice—especially at its affordable price point of just $799 for a queen size. (Need more advanced cooling? Consider upgrading to Douglas Alpine.)

Company Background
Douglas is owned by GoodMorning.com, Canada’s largest independent online mattress retailer. The Douglas brand entered the bed-in-a-box market in 2017 and quickly became known for its high quality and low prices. Douglas has benefitted from the eight years’ worth of experience, engineering data, and customer feedback of its parent company’s first mattress, Novosbed (now Octave, Canada’s best cooling mattress).
The made-in-Canada brand positions itself as an eco-conscious alternative to other direct-to-consumer mattresses. All Douglas mattresses are manufactured in factories in Ontario and Alberta, most of which use primarily sustainable energy sources. The company uses eco-conscious materials, and its manufacturing process has a lower carbon footprint than many of its top competitors.
