Foam Mattress with Zoned Memory Foam

Casper Original is a memory foam mattress made by the American-founded brand, Casper. At the time we purchased the mattress for this review, it was made in Mexico according to its law label. Now, however, most of Casper Canada’s mattresses are now made in Canada.

Featuring zoned support and solid motion isolation, Casper Original sells for $1,499 for a queen size—almost twice as expensive as comparable foam mattresses like Douglas.

Casper may be a recognized brand, but its 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are only average in the industry. It may be worth exploring other brands that offer additional features for the same price or less.

Note: This review is for the Casper Original mattress, which has been discontinued and replaced with The Casper. All information, including sizing and pricing, is specific to Casper Original.

Product Details

Like many foam mattresses, Casper Original has good motion isolation and average edge support. Its standout feature is the zoned support, where the foam is divided into three ergonomic zones to help align the spine correctly. However, compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, Casper Original is relatively expensive at $1,499 for a queen size.

The latest version of Casper Original has one fewer layer and feels softer than Casper’s previous version. The mattress cover, like on all Casper mattresses, is not machine washable and can only be spot-cleaned.

Note: Casper Original is no longer in production. While you can’t buy the Casper Original mattress in Canada through their website, you may find it at Casper Sleep Shops and other retailers.

Note: This mattress has been discontinued and replaced by The Casper, and is no longer available for purchase on Casper Canada’s website. You may be able to find this mattress through other select retailers. All shipping, trial, and delivery information was accurate for this mattress at the time of our purchase.

Casper has a limited number of Sleep Shop locations throughout Canada. These physical stores offer the same policies as the Casper website. That includes free delivery to most parts of Canada and the US, delivery within 5–15 business days including dispatch time, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 10– year warranty. These are industry-standard timelines, but some competing mattresses offer longer sleep trials and warranties.

Note that if you buy Casper Original through a retailer like Sleep Country, the policies may differ from what Casper offers. Check with the retailer directly for specific information.

Casper Mattress Construction

The Casper Original mattress contains 3 layers of foam.

• Layer 1: The comfort layer has 1″ of open-cell polyurethane foam, which is perforated for extra airflow. Casper says this layer is designed to keep you comfortable and help control your body temperature while you’re lying down.
• Layer 2: The transition layer has 2″ of memory foam with zoned support. This means the middle of the mattress is reinforced to handle the weight of your hips, which helps promote spinal alignment.
• Layer 3: The support layer contains 7″ of polyurethane support foam. This layer helps the mattress stay structured and supportive so you don’t sink too far into the upper layers.

Note: While the now-discontinued Casper Original provided zoned support, its replacement (The Casper) doesn’t. As a result, the newer mattress may feel less firm or supported across the centre.

Casper Original’s polyester cover is made from recycled plastic bottles, cotton, rayon, and spandex. The cover can’t be removed despite having a zipper, so it’s essential to exercise caution and spot-clean the mattress only.

Foam mattresses usually have just average edge support, and Casper Original is typical with a ranking of 5.0/10. This means you may experience a lack of support when sitting or sleeping near the edge of the mattress.

Typically, foam mattresses earn better motion isolation scores than innerspring products—good news for couples and restless sleepers. At 7.1/10, Casper’s motion isolation score is comparable to other foam mattresses.

But if you’re looking for a truly uninterrupted sleep, consider Douglas and its motion isolation rating of 8.3/10.

Foam mattresses are usually less bouncy than innerspring mattresses due to the lack of springs. Casper earned a 4.8/10 bounce rating, similar to other foam mattresses. (Douglas has even less bounce at 3.1/10, making it a good option if you’re a light sleeper.)

Casper Original isn’t designed with any advanced cooling features or technology. The company does advertise one basic cooling feature, however:

If you’re looking for a mattress with more cooling features, consider Douglas Original with its moisture-wicking cover and layer of cooling gel foam. Douglas is also more accessibly priced at just $799 for a queen size, compared to $1,499 for Casper Original.

Company Background

Founded in New York City, Casper first emerged in 2014 as an early North American bed-in-a-box brand. The company expanded its product lineup over the years with substantial funding from organizations like the Target Corporation and celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher.

Casper went public in 2020 but was taken private again in 2022 after a stock collapse. Also in 2022, Casper shut down its European operations, focusing exclusively on the North American market. In 2023, Casper sold its Canadian operations to Sleep Country Canada, and in 2024, after attempts to stop losing money, its US operations were acquired by one of its suppliers, Carpenter Corporation.

Today, the company offers mattresses, bedding accessories, and home decor. Products are sold online, through branded retail stores, and through Sleep Country locations in Canada. Their mattresses are sometimes accompanied by rotating sales or deals that may include free sleep accessories.

Although Casper has separate American and Canadian operations, the brand has one combined Trustpilot page, which rates it as “Poor” (based on over 6,000 customer reviews). On the Better Business Bureau, Casper’s American profile is rated “A+” (unaccredited), but has a customer review rating of just 1.17 out of 5 stars. Casper does not have a Canadian BBB profile, but its parent company Sleep Country Canada has a customer review score of just 1.28/5 on BBB, and is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot.

Where Casper makes its mattresses depends on whether you buy in Canada or the USA. Casper Canada makes most of its mattresses in Canada, with select models manufactured in the US. Should You Buy Casper Original?

While zoned memory foam is a competitive feature, Casper’s 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are lacking compared to some top competitors.
