Foam Mattress with Zoned Memory Foam

Casper Original is a memory foam mattress made in the United States. Featuring zoned support, solid motion isolation, and a bit of “hug,” Casper Original sells for $1,499 for a queen size—much more expensive than comparable foam mattresses with better features like Douglas.

Casper may be a recognized brand, but its 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are only average in the industry. It’s worth exploring other brands that offer additional features for the same price or less.

Note: This review is for the Casper Original mattress, which has been discontinued and replaced with The Casper. All information, including sizing and pricing, is specific to Casper Original.

Looking for a high-quality all-foam mattress at a more competitive price? You should consider Douglas.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Casper has a limited number of Sleep Store locations throughout Canada. These physical stores offer the same policies as the Casper website. That includes free shipping to most parts of Canada and the US, delivery within 1–3 business days, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 10– year warranty. These are industry-standard timelines, but some competing mattresses offer longer sleep trials and warranties.

Note that if you buy Casper Original through a retailer like Sleep Country, the policies may differ from what Casper offers. Check with the retailer directly for specific information.

The Casper Original mattress contains 3 layers of foam.

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer has 1″ of open-cell polyurethane foam, which is perforated for extra airflow. Casper claims this keeps you comfortable and helps control your body temperature while you’re lying down.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer has 2″ of memory foam with zoned support. This means the middle of the mattress is reinforced to handle the weight of your hips, which helps keep the mattress from sagging over time.
  • Layer 3: The support layer contains 7″ of polyurethane support foam. This layer helps the mattress stay structured and supportive so you don’t sink too far into the upper layers.

Note: While the now-discontinued Casper Original provided zoned support, its replacement (The Casper) doesn’t. As a result, the newer mattress may provide less support in the middle.

Casper Original’s polyester cover is made from recycled plastic bottles, cotton, rayon, and spandex. The cover can’t be removed despite having a zipper, so it’s essential to exercise caution and spot-clean the mattress carefully.

Looking for a mattress with a removable, machine-washable cover? You might like Douglas.

Mattress Performance Results

5.0 /10

Edge Support

Foam mattresses usually have average edge support, and Casper Original is typical with a ranking of 5.0/10. This lack of support can be a downside if you have limited mobility or struggle to get out of bed.

Have your heart set on a foam mattress? You might prefer Douglas and its superior edge support rating of 7.8/10.

7.1 /10

Motion Isolation

Typically, foam mattresses earn better motion isolation scores than innerspring products—good news for couples and restless sleepers. At 7.1/10, Casper’s motion isolation score is comparable to other foam mattresses.

But if you’re looking for a truly uninterrupted sleep, consider Douglas and its motion isolation rating of 8.3/10.

4.8 /10

Bounce

Foam mattresses are usually less bouncy than innerspring mattresses due to the lack of springs. Casper earned a 4.8/10 bounce rating, similar to other foam mattresses. (Douglas has even less bounce at 3.1/10, making it a good option if you’re a light sleeper.)

Company Background

LaunchedCompany HQOwnershipBBB RatingTrustpilot Rating

2014

New York City, USA

Private

“A+”

“Average”

Casper first emerged in 2014 as an early North American bed-in-a-box brand. The company expanded its product lineup over the years with substantial funding from organizations like the Target Corporation and celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher. Today, the company offers mattresses, bedding accessories, and home decor.

Based in New York City, Casper went public in 2020 but was taken private again in 2022 after a stock collapse. Casper also shut down European operations in 2022 and now exclusively operates within the US and Canada. In 2023, Sleep Country acquired the rights to Casper’s Canadian operations.

While the company holds an “Average” rating on Trustpilot and an “A+” rating on Better Business Bureau, Casper only has 1.07/5 stars for customer reviews on BBB at the time this review was written. Several negative Casper mattress reviews mention warranty issues, poor customer service, delivery problems, and other concerns.

It’s also worth noting that the company website only displays a handful of five-star Casper mattress reviews. Without getting the full picture of all customer experiences, it’s difficult to say for certain whether you would enjoy sleeping on a Casper mattress.

Should You Buy Casper Original?

While zoned memory foam is a competitive feature, Casper’s 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are lackluster compared to top competitors.

Consider Douglas for an all-Canadian foam mattress with superior motion isolation, edge support, cooling features, and 365-night risk-free sleep trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Casper cover machine washable?

No, the cover is designed for spot-cleaning only and can’t be removed from the mattress. Even though there’s a zipper on the mattress cover, don’t remove the cover for any reason.

Where can I buy the Casper Original in Canada?

Casper Original is no longer available on the Casper website, but you may find this mattress at a Casper Sleep Shop location in Canada. Casper Original may also be available via major e-retailers who still have it in stock, as well as some mattress, furniture, and department stores.

Are there different versions of the Casper Original?

Yes. While all versions are similar, recent Casper Original mattresses have a slightly shorter height, fewer layers, and softer feel than earlier versions. Note that if you purchased an older Casper Original, a newer model may not fit your bed frame the same way.

Where is the Casper Original mattress made?

Casper Original was made in the United States, but is now discontinued and is no longer being manufactured.

How much does the Casper mattress cost?

The Casper Original mattress price is $999–$1,999, depending on which mattress size you choose. The Casper Original queen mattress is available for $1,499.

What Casper mattress alternatives should I consider?

Casper Original has been discontinued and replaced by The Casper, a similar mattress with minor differences. This updated model is one inch shorter (10″ in height) compared to the Original, is half an inch shorter in length and width, and no longer includes three-zone support in the middle layer.

A Douglas mattress is a good Casper alternative. This medium-firm memory foam mattress is ideal for all sleep styles. Douglas earned top scores for its use of high-quality, eco-conscious materials, overall comfort, and excellent value at just $799 for a queen size, compared to the much higher Casper mattress price of $1,499.
