Edge support and motion isolation are factored into our overall mattress ratings. These scores are shown in green (scores of 5.0+), yellow (3.0–4.9), or red (2.9 and below). Firmness, bounce, and cooling features are a matter of personal preference and aren’t part of our rating system, so these scores are shown in grey.

Product Details
Casper Dawn is a 9″ all-foam mattress with 3 layers. It’s available in two firmess levels: medium-firm and extra firm. We purchased the Dawn mattress for this review when there was only one medium-firm version available, which, according to third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), actually had a firm feel. It also tested for having excellent edge support and very good motion isolation, as well as a below-average bounce score.
Its cover is made of polyester, polypropylene, and a small amount of spandex. Although the mattress’s law label says that the top part of the cover is machine washable, the Casper website’s FAQ section says not to remove the cover for any reason. Any spots or stains should be spot-cleaned only.
Casper Dawn also lacks cooling features that come standard with many mattresses, like a layer of cooling gel foam. If you’re a hot sleeper, you may prefer a mattress with a greater number of cooling features.
In comparison, Douglas Original features a machine-washable cover, a 20-year warranty, and a 365-night sleep trial. It also incorporates more cooling technologies, including moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres in the cover, cooling gel foam, and breathable Elastex® foam. At just $799 for a queen size, Douglas offers more features for a much lower price.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Casper Dawn arrives at your home packaged in a box in 5–15 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. Shipping is through UPS and is free for most areas in Canada. That said, delivery may take longer if you live in Yukon, Nunavut, or the Northwest Territories. You may also have to pay an additional shipping fee for remote areas.

Casper offers a 100-night sleep trial for you to try out Casper Dawn. However, you will need to wait 30 days before the company will accept your mattress for a return. Returns come with a full refund and a free pickup service.
The company offers an industry-standard 10-year limited warranty for Casper Dawn. This warranty covers defects in workmanship and materials only. It doesn’t cover damage the mattress might receive while shipping or any incidental damage.
Compared to competing mattress brands like Douglas, Casper’s sleep trial and warranty are only average for the industry. Douglas comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty. This gives you much more time to get to know your mattress.

Casper Dawn Mattress Construction
Casper Dawn stands 9″ tall and has 3 layers of foam. All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified. Casper does not publicly disclose the densities of the foams used.
- Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer is 1.5″ of polyurethane foam. This layer is designed to add plushness as you lie down on the mattress.
- Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 1.5″ of Casper’s transition foam, which stops you from feeling the denser support layer beneath. Casper says this foam also provides pressure-point relief, but doesn’t explain how.
- Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 6″ of dense support foam. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk and stops you from sinking into the mattress too deeply while you’re lying down.
Casper Dawn’s cozy knit cover is made from polyester, polypropylene, and a small amount of spandex. Although the law label indicates that the top portion of the cover is machine washable, the company says not to remove the mattress cover for any reason. Any stains on the cover should be spot-cleaned only.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

7.0 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Casper Dawn had a deflection of 1.8″ when laid on, resulting in a 7.0/10 firmness score.
This places the mattress in the firm category. While this level of mattress firmness can be comfortable for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, some side sleepers may find they experience pressure points on a firm mattress.
(Looking for a bed that’s a bit softer? Douglas Original‘s 6.7/10 firmness rating puts it in the medium-firm category, making it ideal for all sleep styles.)

9.3 /10
Edge Support
Casper Dawn had a deflection of 3.0″ from a seated position, contributing to its 9.3/10 for edge support score. This is an exceptional score, especially for a foam mattress. You can sit on the edge of the mattress without any difficulty, and you can sleep closer to the edge without falling off.
7.5 /10
Motion Isolation
Casper Dawn scored 7.5/10 for motion isolation, which is a very good score for a foam mattress. You and your partner shouldn’t notice each other moving around as you sleep.
(Need extra motion isolation? Douglas Original scored 8.3/10 for motion isolation, ensuring that you and your partner can get an undisturbed sleep.)
3.8 /10
Bounce
Casper Dawn scored 3.8/10 for bounce, which is below average. A lower bounce score is typical for foam mattresses, and makes for a consistent sleep surface.
(Want even less bounce in your mattress? Douglas Original has a bounce score of 3.1/10.)

1.0 /10
Cooling Features
Casper Dawn isn’t a cooling mattress, in contrast to some of the manufacturer’s other mattresses. However, it still provides a limited amount of cooling. This mattress earns a point for its Cozy Knit cover, which is designed for breathability (identified by the “1” in the image above).
While Casper Dawn makes that one concession toward cooling, it lacks cooling features that other mattresses often include at a lower price point. Competitor mattress Douglas Original, for instance, has a moisture-wicking cover and a layer of cooling gel foam for a cooler sleep experience.

Company Background
Founded in New York City, Casper first emerged in 2014 as an early North American bed-in-a-box brand. The company expanded its product lineup over the years with substantial funding from organizations like the Target Corporation and celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher.
Casper went public in 2020 but was taken private again in 2022 after a stock collapse. Also in 2022, Casper shut down its European operations, focusing exclusively on the North American market. In 2023, Casper sold its Canadian operations to Sleep Country Canada, and in 2024, after attempts to stop losing money, its US operations were acquired by one of its suppliers, Carpenter Corporation.
Today, the company offers mattresses, bedding accessories, and home decor. Products are sold online, through branded retail stores, and through Sleep Country locations in Canada. Their mattresses are sometimes accompanied by rotating sales or deals that may include free sleep accessories.
Although Casper has separate American and Canadian operations, the brand has one combined Trustpilot page, which rates it as “Poor” (based on over 6,000 customer reviews). On the Better Business Bureau, Casper’s American profile is rated “A+” (unaccredited), but has a customer review rating of just 1.17 out of 5 stars. Casper does not have a Canadian BBB profile, but its parent company Sleep Country Canada has a customer review score of just 1.27/5 on BBB, and is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot.
Where Casper makes its mattresses depends on whether you buy in Canada or the USA. Casper Canada makes most of its mattresses in Canada, with select models manufactured in the US. We have received Casper mattresses made in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The label of each mattress has information about where it was manufactured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Casper mattresses good?
Casper mattresses perform well in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). That said, Casper Dawn lacks many features found in other foam mattresses. It’s also more expensive than similar foam mattresses, despite being described as Casper’s “value” mattress.
In comparison, competitor mattress Douglas Original comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, a machine-washable cover, and a free bedding bundle—all for just $799 for a queen size.
Where are Casper mattresses made?
Casper Canada makes most of its mattresses in Canada, with select models manufactured in the US.
Are Casper mattresses non-toxic?
Casper mattresses are both OEKO-TEX® certified and CertiPUR-US® certified. This means they’re made without substances that are known to be harmful to people or the environment.
Are Casper mattresses worth it?
Casper Dawn performs well for edge support and motion isolation. But at $999 for a queen size, it’s more expensive than other foam mattresses that offer comparable features.
For example, Douglas Original offers more cooling features, a machine-washable cover, a much longer 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle—all for just $799 for a queen size.
Can a Casper mattress go on a box spring?
Yes, you can use your Casper mattress on a box spring or foundation. However, Casper recommends using a foundation with wooden slats that are at least 2.5″ wide and no more than 3″ apart.
Can a Casper mattress be flipped?
No, Casper mattresses can’t be flipped. Like most modern mattresses, Casper mattresses are designed to be oriented in one direction only.
Can you wash the Casper mattress cover?
No. While Casper Dawn’s law label says the cover is machine washable, the Casper website says not to remove the mattress cover for any reason. To be safe, it’s best to spot-clean the cover as needed without removing it from the mattress.
How long do Casper mattresses last?
Casper mattresses come with an industry-standard 10-year warranty, so they should last at least that long.
Can you sleep on a Casper mattress right away?
Yes, you can sleep on a Casper mattress after unboxing it. That said, the company warns that it may be somewhat uncomfortable if you try to lie down on it right away. Casper recommends giving the mattress 24–48 hours to expand fully.
Does the Casper mattress have fiberglass?
According to the FAQ page on Casper.com (Casper’s American website), certain Casper models contain fiberglass to meet fire safety regulations in the United States.
While these fire regulations don’t apply in Canada, there is no public information on Casper’s Canadian site, Casper.ca, regarding whether or not their mattresses also contain fiberglass. We followed up with Casper Canada representatives, who confirmed that any Casper mattress ordered and delivered in Canada will be fiberglass free.
The Casper Dawn mattress we received did not contain fiberglass. We’d recommend reaching out to Casper’s support team if you need more information.
What Casper mattress alternatives should I consider?
We think you should take a look at Douglas Original. At just $799 for a queen size, every part of Douglas is built with good value in mind. With cooling features, a machine-washable cover, a generous 365-night sleep trial, a longer-than-average 20-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle, Douglas offers more for a lower price than Casper Dawn.
