Our Rankings
Edge support and motion isolation are factored into our overall mattress ratings. These scores are shown in green (scores of 5.0+), yellow (3.0–4.9), or red (2.9 and below). Firmness, bounce, and cooling features are a matter of personal preference and aren’t part of our rating system, so these scores are shown in grey.

Product Details
Beautyrest Black is 18″ tall and is composed of 7 layers, not counting the Euro-style pillowtop. The Simmons Beautyrest Black mattress includes cooling features like a gel foam layer, phase change material, and cooling fabrics. Because of its exceptional depth and plush construction, this mattress has a considerable amount of “sink.” Without supportive zoned coils, some sleepers may find this creates discomfort throughout the night.
This mattress has good motion isolation and a fair amount of bounce, according to third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). However, it also has the weakest edge support of any mattress we’ve tested. This is unusual, since the mattress has 3″ encasement foam that’s designed to reinforce its sidewalls and keep layers from sinking too far when pressure is applied.
The mattress has a price range of $3,629–$4,199 and is available from twin XL to king size. It comes with several features that may explain its much higher price point. That said, several of these features are also available in lower-priced competitors like Logan & Cove Pinnacle.
Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence has just a handful of customer reviews on The Brick and Beautyrest websites. This makes it difficult to confirm whether the mattress would provide a good night’s sleep. However, there are reviews for Beautyrest’s parent company, Serta Simmons, on third-party review platforms like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau. The company is rated “F” (unaccredited) on BBB with just 1.73/5 stars, and is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot.
(In comparison, Logan & Cove’s parent company is rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.)

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
The Brick doesn’t include delivery in Beautyrest Black’s purchase price. Shipping costs are calculated based on the distance between your home and the specific store you’re ordering from. The Brick’s website also doesn’t offer an estimate on how long it will take to deliver your mattress once purchased.
The mattress is delivered to your home wrapped in plastic and fully expanded. Beautyrest Black’s height and weight are unusually high, even for a hybrid mattress. In fact, this is the heaviest mattress we have ever reviewed. You will likely find the mattress very difficult to move. Given this difficulty, you may also find the packaging is damaged during transport. The mattress we ordered arrived with several holes in the plastic layer.
You’ll have a 90-night sleep trial to test out Beautyrest Black. That’s slightly shorter than the industry standard of 100 nights. If you’re unsatisfied with your mattress and want to return or exchange it, The Brick will charge you to ship the mattress back to the store. The Brick also doesn’t offer refunds—you can only get store credit to put toward a different mattress.
The mattress comes with a 10-year warranty covering manufacturing defects. However, Simmons has received numerous BBB complaints about product quality and warranty claims. This suggests many customers have not only needed to use their mattress warranty, but also had difficulty getting their claims honoured.
In comparison, competing hybrid mattresses like Logan & Cove Pinnacle come with a longer 15-year warranty, a generous 365-night sleep trial, and a full refund if you aren’t satisfied with your purchase.
Take a full 365 nights to get to know Logan & Cove Pinnacle.

Beautyrest Mattress Construction
Beautyrest Black is a hybrid mattress with 7 distinct layers. It stands 18″ high, and a queen size weighs 183 lb. The Brick doesn’t publicly share layer thicknesses and foam densities for Beautyrest Black.
- Layer 1: The top layer consists of 1″ HI-LUX gel memory foam. This foam’s design is meant to reduce pressure on your hips and shoulders. The gel infusion may help offset the heat-trapping properties of memory foam.
- Layer 2: The second layer is another 1″ of memory foam. It’s not clear whether this layer is infused with gel foam since The Brick doesn’t provide detailed descriptions for individual mattress layers.
- Layer 3: This 3″ foam layer could be made up of memory foam, based on the look and feel.
- Layer 4: A second 3″ layer of foam makes up the fourth layer of the mattress. It looks and feels similar to the layer above.
- Layer 5: A 1″ layer of grey foam forms the transition layer between the upper foam layers and the steel coils below. We believe this to be a layer of gel-based BlackLux foam, which is designed to be breathable and provide pressure-point relief.
- Layer 6: This layer is made up of 8″ triple-woven, triple-wrapped T3-LUX steel coils. The coils are individually pocketed to enhance motion isolation and provide contouring support. The Brick also describes this coil layer as having alternating coils for proper lumbar support, but they don’t explain what that means. Depending on your sleeping position, you may find this mattress doesn’t maintain proper spinal alignment in the same way as zoned support coils.
- Layer 7: The final layer is 0.5″ of support foam. This provides some protection between the coil layer and the bottom cover of the mattress.
One of the memory foam layers is infused with diamonds, which is advertised to enhance Beautyrest Black’s cooling properties by redirecting heat away from the body. It’s not clear where in the mattress this layer is located since The Brick doesn’t provide detailed layer descriptions on their website. We also don’t know for certain which layer is the BlackLux foam. Depending on where they are, you may or may not notice these layers’ advertised cooling and comfort benefits.
The mattress cover is made of TENCEL™, a highly breathable material that helps wick away moisture so you don’t wake up sweating. There is also 0.5″ of filling in the top cover that contributes to the mattress’s plush feel. However, the “sink” provided by the pillowtop may trap heat and counteract some of the mattress’s cooling benefits.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.
1.3 /10
Edge Support
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Beautyrest Black tested exceptionally low for edge support with a score of just 1.3/10. This is the lowest edge support score of the 120+ mattresses we have tested to date. You will likely struggle to sit on the edge of the bed and have trouble getting up in the morning.
In comparison, competitor Logan & Cove Pinnacle earned an above-average edge support score of 6.0/10. If you have mobility issues or like to sit on the edge of your mattress, Logan & Cove could be a better fit for your needs.
6.8 /10
Motion Isolation
Beautyrest Black scored above average for motion isolation with a 6.8/10. This is likely because the coil layer is located beneath numerous foam layers. You and your partner should be able to sleep soundly without being woken by each other’s movements.
4.8 /10
Bounce
Beautyrest Black earned a bounce score of 4.8/10. This is normal for a hybrid mattress, and means you won’t sink too deeply into your bed while you’re lying on it. You should also find it easy to change sleep positions.

Cooling Features
Beautyrest Black is promoted as a luxury mattress with advanced cooling features. However, its high level of “sink” may lead to heat-trapping, which is a concern for some memory foam mattresses. This may work against the mattress’s advertised cooling benefits. Beautyrest Black earns points for its:
- TENCEL™ cover with a cool-to-the-touch feel and moisture-wicking properties
- Gel-infused foam that allows for enhanced cooling
- Diamond-infused foam, which transfers heat away from the body
- Open-cell foam for increased breathability
- Layer of pocketed coils that improve airflow
For a mattress with similar cooling features at less than half the cost, consider Logan & Cove Pinnacle. With a layer of cooling gel foam, two layers of micro coils, individually wrapped steel pocketed coils, and a top cover woven with cooling nanofibres, this luxury hybrid mattress is designed to give you a cool, comfortable sleep. Logan & Cove Pinnacle is available for just $1,699 for a queen size, compared to $3,649 for Beautyrest Black.

Company Background
The Beautyrest brand is owned by the Simmons Bedding Company, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1870, Simmons developed and sold its first Beautyrest mattress in 1925, using a design featuring individually wrapped wire coils. Simmons is a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding, along with sister company Serta International. Serta Simmons Bedding filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023.
Simmons claims to be committed to quality bedding, but customer reviews tell a different story. The company is rated “F” (unaccredited) with the BBB and has a customer review score of 1.73/5 stars.
BBB has issued an alert noting a “pattern of complaint” among customers, citing multiple reports of defective or misrepresented products, as well as poor customer service. Many customers report that when they request a replacement mattress, they receive a lower-quality mattress in exchange. Other customers report that all communication with customer service stops altogether, with no resolution.
The Beautyrest brand specifically has a “Poor” rating on Trustpilot. Multiple customer reviews report failing product quality and problems getting the company to honour warranty claims.
Since Beautyrest Black is available through The Brick, it’s important to research this company, too. In November 2024, the Canadian Competition Bureau began an investigation of The Brick and its parent company Leon’s for potentially deceptive marketing practices. Concerns are related to the company’s artificially inflated prices and unclear discounts for consumers. The Brick has a star rating of 1.15/5 on BBB and is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot.
Choose a mattress company that’s rated “A+” with BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Beautyrest Black a good mattress?
Beautyrest Black has a number of premium features, but this may not make up for its poor edge support and high price tag of $3,649 for a queen size. It’s also difficult to recommend buying a mattress from The Brick while it’s being investigated by the Canadian Competition Bureau for potentially deceptive marketing practices.
We recommend Logan & Cove Pinnacle instead. It offers advanced cooling features and better edge support, as well as a longer sleep trial and warranty—all for a considerably lower price of $1,699 for a queen size.
Is the Beautyrest Black mattress discontinued?
The Beautyrest Black mattress line is still available in Canada. However, different models in the line may be discontinued and replaced with newer versions over time. Availability of different models will also differ based on the retailer you purchase from.
Is the Beautyrest Black mattress cover machine washable?
No. Beautyrest Black is a pillow-top mattress, so the mattress cover is not removable or machine washable.
Where is the Beautyrest Black mattress made?
The manufacturer, Simmons, produces its mattresses in the United States and Canada.
Who makes Beautyrest Black mattresses?
The Beautyrest brand is owned and manufactured by Simmons, a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding LLC.
How much does a Beautyrest Black mattress cost?
Beautyrest Black costs $3,629–$4,199, depending on the size you choose. This mattress is available from twin XL to king sizes. You might be able to purchase a Beautyrest Black mattress on sale, but even their reduced sale prices can be more expensive than similar mattresses found online.
The Brick and Leon’s are also being investigated by the Canadian Competition Bureau for potentially deceptive marketing practices. The Competition Bureau is looking into claims that the company doesn’t properly represent the discount that customers will receive during a sale, among other allegations. We’ve noticed the lack of retail price during sales on The Brick’s website many times while writing reviews.
Does Beautyrest Black need a boxspring?
Yes, Beautyrest Black requires you use a warranty-approved mattress base or boxspring that is compatible with the mattress. According to the product specifications on The Brick’s website, the compatible base is the matching Beautyrest Black boxspring. Be sure to factor in the added cost of the boxspring before purchasing this mattress.

How do I return a Beautyrest Black mattress?
You can choose between returning the mattress to The Brick yourself, or using the store’s pickup service for a fee. You will only be able to return Beautyrest Black for store credit, not a full refund.
