Which Is Better: Purple or Douglas?

Douglas Summit is a foam mattress with advanced cooling features like gel foam, phase-change material, and cooling nanofibres in the machine-washable top cover. Purple Restore Hybrid is the most affordable hybrid mattress in the Purple lineup and features Purple’s GelFlex Grid technology. But there is no comparison between the two—Douglas Summit is the clear winner.

Only Douglas Summit features superior motion isolation and pressure-point relief. It comes with a 20-year warranty, a 365-night sleep trial, and a free bedding bundle. Douglas Summit is also more affordable at just $1,299 for a queen size, compared to $3,312 for Purple Restore Hybrid. In addition, Douglas is made and sold in Canada, while Purple isn’t available outside of the United States.

Mattress Breakdown

Douglas Summit provides advanced cooling features, impressive edge support, best-in-class motion isolation, a 365-night sleep trial with free return pickup and full refund, and a 20-year warranty. Douglas Summit also has an excellent online reputation for product quality and customer care. The company is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” on BBB. To date, the Douglas brand has earned over 13,000 five-star reviews from verified customers.

In comparison, the US-made Purple Restore Hybrid has a much shorter 100-night sleep trial and limited features. Reviews on Trustpilot and Reddit indicate that Purple sags and breaks down well before the end of the mattress’s 10-year warranty, and mention issues with warranty claims and customer service. Purple also costs over twice as much as Douglas Summit—even without the cost of arranging your own international shipping.

Firmness

In independent third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Purple Restore Hybrid scored 6.4/10 for firmness. This rating puts Purple in the medium-firm category, which is ideal for all sleep styles. However, we purchased the firm version of this mattress, meaning you’ll likely find it softer than advertised.

Douglas Summit scored 6.7/10 for firmness. This rating is slightly firmer than the “firm” version of Purple Restore Hybrid, and provides a good balance of comfort and support. Douglas Summit might be a better choice if you’re looking for a supportive mattress with a touch more firmness.

Edge Support

Purple Restore Hybrid scored 9.5/10 for edge support. You won’t sink deeply into the sidewalls, so you can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed or sleep near the edge of the bed without being concerned about slipping or falling off.

Foam mattresses aren’t normally known for having good edge support, but Douglas Summit stands out with an above-average score of 7.5/10 in engineer testing. You’ll find the edges are nicely cushioned, so you can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed, and get out of bed easily in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets—especially if you’re a light sleeper. Comparing Douglas vs Purple, Douglas Summit has the highest motion isolation score of any mattress we’ve tested, at 8.8/10. That means you can expect to sleep more soundly, without noticing movement from the other side of the bed.

Purple Restore Hybrid has an above-average motion isolation score of 7.5/10. This should keep you from noticing much movement from the other side of the bed. Still, if you’re looking for exceptional motion isolation for the most undisturbed sleep, you should look at Douglas Summit instead.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. Low bounce is good for a more undisturbed sleep—especially if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken—while higher bounce is ideal if you often change sleep positions.

Purple has above-average bounce at 7.8/10. This is a very high score, even for a hybrid mattress. You won’t have any trouble changing sleep positions or getting out of bed. However, you’re more likely to notice larger movements from the other side of the mattress. If undisturbed sleep is important to you, you’d be better off looking at a mattress with less bounce.

Like many combination foam mattresses, Douglas Summit has a low bounce score of 3.0/10. You’ll still find it easy to change sleep positions and get out of bed with this mattress, thanks to the Elastex® transition layer that provides extra spring and support. Paired with Douglas Summit’s exceptional motion isolation score, you can enjoy more undisturbed sleep.

Douglas Summit is a Canadian foam mattress that stands 12″ tall. Its 3 foam layers include cooling gel foam enhanced with phase-change material, Elastex® foam for additional spring and support, and motion-isolation support foam.

Purple Restore Hybrid is made in the United States. It stands 11.5″ tall and has 3 layers, including Purple’s GelFlex polymer grid, adaptive polyurethane foam, and individually pocketed coils.

Douglas Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer features 2.5″ ecoLight® cooling gel foam, which is lighter, more durable, and more eco-friendly than traditional memory foam. It effectively dissipates heat and improves air circulation. This layer is enhanced by Polar® Temperature Balancing, a phase-change material that regulates mattress temperature. Foam density: 2.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is 2.5″ of Elastex® foam. This offers both springiness and support, similar to the way many mattresses use latex. But unlike latex, this foam is free from allergy-triggering chemicals. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 3: The support layer, which makes up half of the mattress’s overall height, is 7″ of motion-isolation foam. Designed to provide exceptional motion isolation support, it virtually eliminates any transfer of movement from the other side of the bed. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.

Purple Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer includes Purple’s flexible 2″ GelFlex polymer grid. It’s designed to dissipate heat and relieve pressure. This grid is encased in edge support foam along the sidewalls.
  • Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 1.5″ of adaptive polyurethane foam that conforms to your body’s shape. This adds to the mattress’s overall comfort, and prevents you from feeling the coils in the support layer.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 8″ thick and contains responsive, individually pocketed coils. These coils give the mattress most of its bulk, and keep you from sinking too deeply into the mattress while you’re lying on it.

Douglas Summit has a CoolSense® mattress cover made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres and CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres. The result is a moisture-wicking knit fabric that’s soft, durable, and breathable. The top cover is removable and machine washable.

Purple Restore Hybrid’s SoftFlex cover is made with polyester, rayon, elastic, and a synthetic “sheath/core” polymer yarn that’s designed to be breathable and antimicrobial. Even though the mattress cover has a zipper, it isn’t machine washable and can only be spot cleaned. In fact, removing the cover could void Purple Restore Hybrid’s warranty.

It’s also worth noting that Purple is extremely heavy and difficult to move. In fact, the company says the mattress is too heavy to be used with a traditional box spring or foundation. This means you may not be able to use your current bed frame with Purple Restore Hybrid.

Douglas Summit ships by ground for free using FedEx. Additional fees may apply for remote locations. Your order ships in 3–10 business days and is delivered right to your door throughout most of Canada. Douglas arrives in a cardboard box and is protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. The box is easy to move, as its weight ranges from 47 lb to 93 lb. Once removed from the box, the mattress fully expands in just a few minutes.

Purple Restore Hybrid only ships within the United States. It isn’t available in Canada unless you arrange your own cross-border shipping with a third-party courier and pay applicable shipping fees. Purple arrives rolled up in a canvas-and-plastic bag. You’ll likely need two strong people to move it, as the mattress weighs 72 lb to 140 lb. We’ve reviewed heavier mattresses, but Purple is the most difficult mattress we’ve moved.

Douglas Summit gives you more time to try your mattress with an industry-leading, risk-free 365-night sleep trial. If you choose to return your mattress, Douglas Summit will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period and issue a full refund. Just contact customer service to coordinate your return.

In comparison, Purple has a much shorter trial period—just 100 nights. It’s unclear whether this sleep trial is honoured outside the United States, or if Canadians can return a Purple mattress for a full refund.

Douglas also offers a generous warranty of 20 years, while Purple’s 10-year warranty is only half as long. Purple’s website also says the mattress warranty is void outside the United States. This is important to know as a Canadian customer, since numerous Trustpilot and Reddit reviews complain of Purple sagging and breaking down within a few years of use. Reviews also mention issues with warranty claims and problems with customer service.
