Which Is Better: Octave or Purple?

Purple and Octave are both well-known mattress brands, but Octave mattresses offer a better night’s sleep for almost one-fourth the price of Purple.

Octave Vista is designed with advanced cooling features like temperature-regulating fabrics and copper-infused memory foam to dissipate heat, plus a five-zone body support system to relieve strain on your muscles and joints. Octave also has a 365-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty. A queen-size Octave Vista is priced at just $899, and it comes with a free bedding bundle for even more savings.

In comparison, Purple has limited features and benefits. This US-made hybrid mattress has a layer of Purple’s GelFlex Grid technology and excellent edge support, but it doesn’t offer any specific cooling features. It’s exceptionally heavy and isn’t compatible with foundations, so you may not be able to use it with your current bed frame.

With only an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty, Purple doesn’t provide the extra value you’d expect for a mattress that costs $3,359 for a queen size. Purple also isn’t available in Canada, making this mattress even more inaccessible for Canadian shoppers.

Purple’s main selling feature is the GelFlex® grid in the top layer. This polymer grid is designed to provide soft, supportive pressure-point relief—but that’s only part of what makes a mattress comfortable. Purple Restore Hybrid doesn’t have any cooling features to help control temperatures while you sleep. The mattress is only available in the United States and comes with an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty.

Firmness

Purple Restore Hybrid comes in two firmness options: soft and firm. We ordered the firm option. However, Purple Restore Hybrid scored 6.4/10 for firmness in third-party engineer testing. This score is consistent with a medium-firm feel.

In comparison, Octave Vista scored 6.8/10 for firmness. This means Vista is still medium-firm, but it feels a little firmer than Purple Restore Hybrid.

Medium-firm mattresses are ideal for all sleep styles. You should find either mattress comfortable whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. That said, only Octave Vista has a five-zoned ergonomic support system, giving you targeted pressure-point relief and soothing sore muscles.

Edge Support

Purple Restore Hybrid scored 9.5/10 for edge support. While hybrid mattresses often have good edge support, this is a high score for any mattress. You shouldn’t find yourself sinking too far into the sidewalls. You can sit on the edge of the bed—or sleep near the edge—without worrying about falling off.

Foam mattresses aren’t often known for having good edge support, but Octave Vista is a notable exception with an above-average score of 7.5/10. You can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed, and you’ll have no trouble getting up in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Good motion isolation helps you enjoy a restful night’s sleep without being disturbed by your partner, kids, or pets. Both Purple Restore Hybrid and Octave Vista earned above-average scores for motion isolation. Octave scored 7.3/10, while Purple scored 7.5/10.

Bounce

Like many foam mattresses, Octave has a below-average bounce score of 3.7/10. That’s good news if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken. Octave Vista also has a layer of responsive Elastex® foam so you can change positions without any difficulty. This foam layer is designed to be contouring as well as responsive, and works with the mattress’s five-zone support system to give you a supportive, restful sleep throughout the night.

Purple Restore Hybrid has an exceptionally high bounce score of 7.8/10. With a bounce score this high, you may feel larger movements from the other side of the mattress, like your partner getting into bed or changing positions.

Cooling Features

Foam can be known to trap heat, so most modern foam mattresses incorporate cooling features to help ensure breathability and airflow for comfortable sleep. Octave achieves this by incorporating features such as CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres in the mattress cover, PolarMAX® phase-change material, a layer of CopperGel™ infused memory foam, and breathable Elastex® foam. These elements earned Octave Vista a cooling features score of 7.2/10. 

Despite being a hybrid mattress, which is known to be more breathable due to its coils, Purple received a cooling features score of just 2.5/10. This mattress has limited cooling properties, including the pocket coils and air channels in its GelFlex™ Grid, both of which allow more air circulation. These scores indicate you’re more likely to have a cooler and more comfortable sleep on Octave Vista.

Mattress Construction

Octave Vista and Purple Restore Hybrid are both 3-layer mattresses designed to provide pressure-point relief. Beyond that, however, Octave and Purple are two very different mattresses.

Octave Vista is a memory foam mattress made in Canada. It stands 12″ tall and is highly engineered with top-quality cooling features, five-zoned ergonomic support, and a machine-washable cover for easy cleaning.

Purple Restore Hybrid is a hybrid mattress made in the United States. It stands 11.5″ tall, has a GelFlex® polymer grid, and uses individually pocketed coils. This mattress doesn’t have a machine-washable cover. It’s also exceptionally heavy and difficult to move. In fact, Purple states the mattress is too heavy to be used with a traditional box spring, or even with certain bed frames.

Octave Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: Octave Vista’s top (comfort) layer is 2″ of CopperGel™ memory foam treated with PolarMAX® phase-change material, which adapts to seasonal temperature changes. This layer contours around your body, providing immediate relief from strain on your muscles and joints. Copper is also an antimicrobial metal and helps promote a clean, fresh sleep surface while transferring heat away from your body.
• Layer 2: Vista’s transition layer is 2″ of premium Elastex® foam, which is designed to be breathable and responsive. This specialized foam layer has the same springy feel as natural latex with the same pressure-relieving feel. The added bounce also makes it easier for you to change sleep positions.
• Layer 3: The support layer is 8″ of high-density foam divided into a unique five-zoned support system. This layer provides contouring support for your body, with added support beneath your back, hips, and knees. This innovative design reduces discomfort and stiffness while caring for your body and aiding in its natural recovery.

Octave Vista has a machine-washable top cover that you can unzip for easy removal. The cover is made with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres. This gives the sleep surface a refreshingly cool feel while it wicks away moisture from your body throughout the night. Octave uses premium and long-lasting high-density foams in all its mattresses, and doesn’t use any toxic chemicals or fiberglass.

Purple Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer includes Purple’s flexible 2″ GelFlex polymer grid. It’s designed to dissipate heat and relieve pressure. This grid is encased in edge support foam along the sidewalls.
• Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 1.5″ of adaptive polyurethane foam that conforms to your body’s shape. This adds to the mattress’s overall comfort, and prevents you from feeling the coils in the support layer.
• Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 8″ thick and contains responsive, individually pocketed coils. These coils give the mattress most of its bulk, and keep you from sinking too deeply into the mattress while you’re lying on it.

Purple promotes its foams as high-quality polyurethane, but doesn’t share any density details about its polymer grid or other materials. The company only says the grid is made of a hyper-elastic polymer composed of 90% mineral oil. This lack of detail isn’t ideal, since it’s best to know as much as you can about your mattress.

Purple Restore Hybrid’s SoftFlex mattress cover contains polyester, rayon, elastic, and a synthetic “sheath/core” polymer yarn. The company doesn’t disclose any other information about the cover, but says it’s designed to be breathable and anti-microbial. While the mattress cover has a zipper, you can’t remove the cover without voiding the mattress warranty. The mattress cover can only be spot-cleaned.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Octave ships by ground for free using FedEx. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations. Octave Vista ships from Ontario or Alberta directly to your door in 3–10 business days, including dispatch and delivery time.

Octave Vista is shipped in a cardboard box and protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. Once unrolled, the mattress fully expands within a few minutes and is sleep-ready on delivery day. You can move and set up your Octave mattress fairly easily, as the mattress weighs between 44 lb and 87 lb, depending on the size.

In comparison, Purple Restore Hybrid only ships within the United States. It isn’t available in Canada unless you arrange your own cross-border shipping with a third-party courier and pay various shipping and duty fees.

Purple arrives rolled up in a canvas-and-plastic bag with handles. It requires two people to move, as the mattress weighs between 72 lb and 141 lb, depending on the size. While Purple is not the heaviest mattress we’ve ever reviewed, we found it the most difficult to move. Purple’s law label also says it’s not compatible with foundations. You may need to purchase a different bed frame before using a Purple mattress.

Octave provides a generous 365-night sleep trial. During this time, you can return the mattress for a full refund if you don’t love it. Purple, on the other hand, only offers a 100-night trial. It’s not clear whether this sleep trial would be honoured outside of the United States, or if Canadians can return a mattress to Purple for a full refund.

Octave also has a longer 15-year warranty compared to Purple’s 10-year warranty. Purple’s website also says that the mattress warranty is void outside the United States. This is concerning because multiple reviews on Purple’s Trustpilot page complain of issues with product quality, customer service, and warranty claims.
