We commissioned third-party engineer testing to assess the performance of Douglas Original and Octave Vista. The results of this testing showed that you should get a great night’s sleep with either mattress. It just depends on whether you need advanced cooling and pressure-point relief. Firmness

Douglas Original scored 6.7/10 on the firmness scale. This places the mattress on the slightly firmer side of medium-firm. Octave Vista scored a near-identical 6.8/10. A medium-firm feel is ideal for a variety of sleep styles, including side, back, and stomach sleepers.

However, only Octave Vista has a five-zoned support system that contours to your body, providing targeted relief for those aching joints and muscles.

 

Edge Support

Douglas Original earned an above-average edge support score of 7.8/10. This is partly thanks to the mattress’s all-around sidewalls. Octave Vista scored slightly lower at 7.5/10, but this score is still above-average for a foam mattress. Either mattress makes it easy to sit on the edge of the bed without sliding off.

 

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets. Douglas Original has one of the highest motion isolation scores of any mattress we’ve tested, at 8.3/10. (For reference, Douglas Alpine and Douglas Summit currently hold our top motion isolation scores.)

Octave scored lower for motion isolation at 7.3/10. However, this is still an above-average score. If you choose either mattress, you shouldn’t be woken by movement on the other side of the bed.

 

Bounce

Generally, foam mattresses have lower bounce scores than their innerspring cousins. Douglas has a below-average bounce score of 3.1/10. This is thanks to its foam construction and excellent motion isolation. Octave’s bounce score is a little higher at 3.7/10.

You won’t feel “stuck” in either mattress. Both Douglas Original and Octave Vista contain a layer of Elastex®, which feels similar to natural latex. This makes the mattress more springy and responsive so you can easily change positions.

 

Cooling Features

Douglas and Octave both use cooling technologies to help ensure a cool and comfortable sleep. Equipped with a moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover, a layer of ecoLight® cooling gel foam, and breathable Elastex® foam, Douglas earned a cooling features score of 4.2/10. Douglas should help you sleep comfortably in any season.

However, sleepers searching for an extra-cool mattress should look into Octave’s cooling features score of 7.2/10. Octave earned this score thanks to a top cover infused with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres, heat-conducting copper-infused foam, phase-change material for temperature balance, and Elastex® foam and ventilated support foam for airflow and breathability. These features contributed to Octave’s higher score and will help keep temperatures cool throughout the night.

Mattress Construction

Both Douglas Original and Octave Vista are foam mattresses with 3 layers. Each has a middle layer of latex-free Elastex® foam for extra responsiveness and support.

Both mattresses are designed to provide all-around comfort and support. But if you’re looking for advanced cooling and a little extra help getting a good night’s sleep, consider spending just a little more for Octave’s upgraded features.

 

Douglas Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
• Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
• Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

Douglas Original’s top cover is made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit, soft, and extremely durable. It stays cool and breathable throughout the night so you won’t wake up in a pool of sweat. The mattress cover is removable and machine washable for easy cleaning.

 

Octave Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: Octave Vista’s top (comfort) layer is 2″ of CopperGel™ memory foam treated with PolarMAX® phase-change material, which adapts to seasonal temperature changes. This layer contours around your body, providing immediate relief from strain on your muscles and joints. Copper is also an antimicrobial metal and helps promote a clean, fresh sleep surface while transferring heat away from your body.
• Layer 2: Vista’s transition layer is 2″ of premium Elastex® foam, which is designed to be breathable and responsive. This specialized foam layer has the same springy feel as natural latex with the same pressure-relieving feel. The added bounce also makes it easier for you to change sleep positions.
• Layer 3: The support layer is 8″ of high-density foam divided into a unique five-zoned support system. This layer provides contouring support for your body, with added support beneath your back, hips, and knees. This innovative design reduces discomfort and stiffness while caring for your body and aiding in its natural recovery.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Octave and Douglas both ship for free by ground using FedEx. Your mattress is delivered directly to your door throughout most parts of Canada. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations.

Both mattresses ship from Ontario or Alberta. Including shipping dispatch and delivery time, Octave arrives in 3–10 business days, while Douglas arrives in 2–10 business days. Each arrives in a cardboard box, protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. Once unrolled, both Octave and Douglas fully expand within a few minutes and are sleep-ready on delivery day.

Octave and Douglas offer a competitive 365-night sleep trial. Octave’s warranty is 15 years, while Douglas Original’s warranty is 20 years.

If you decide to return your Octave or Douglas mattress, the process is the same. Both companies will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period and issue a full refund. Your old mattress will then be donated to a local charity or recycled, depending on the options in your area.
