Which Is Better: Octave or Casper?

While Octave Horizon and Casper Snow are both mattresses with cooling technologies, only Octave delivers additional pain-relieving features at an affordable price.

Casper Snow is a hybrid mattress made in the United States. It has advanced cooling features like perforated foam, phase-change material, and cooling yarn in the top cover. It also has zoned support and notably good motion isolation. It’s available in Canada through Casper’s website and Sleep Country. However, at $2,999 for a queen size, Casper Snow is twice as expensive as Octave Horizon.

Octave Horizon is a Canadian memory foam mattress that delivers the ultimate in cooling and support. This Canadian mattress is engineered with the most advanced features for recovery and temperature-regulation in the Octave lineup. Equipped with a CryoFusionnanofibre cover, copper-infused memory foam, ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, aerated latex foam, and multi-zone support foam with integrated air channels, Octave creates a balanced and restorative sleep environment that supports your body’s natural recovery process.

Every Octave mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle—all for just $1,499 for a queen size. Overall, Octave is designed to provide a better night’s sleep at half the price of Casper, making it the clear winner.

Firmness

According to independent third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Octave Horizon and Casper Snow earned near-identical scores for firmness. Casper scored 5.9/10 on the firmness scale, and Octave scored 6.0/10.

These scores place both mattresses in the medium-firm category. Medium-firm mattresses are ideal for all sleep styles. You should find this level of firmness comfortable whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.

Edge Support

Hybrid mattresses tend to have higher-than-average edge support, thanks to their supportive inner coils. Casper Snow has good edge support with a rating of 6.5/10.

While foam mattresses often score lower for edge support, Octave Horizon performs even better than Casper Snow with an above-average edge support score of 6.8/10. You should find it easy to sit on the edge of this mattress, and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting out of bed.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is essential for a good night’s sleep, especially if you’re sharing the bed with a restless partner, kids, or pets. Both Octave Horizon and Casper Snow earned excellent scores for motion isolation.

Casper Snow scored 7.9/10, while Octave Horizon scored 7.6/10. You can expect a restful night’s sleep with both mattresses, without noticing much movement from the other side of the bed.

Bounce

Casper Snow earned a bounce score of 3.0/10. This is very low for a hybrid mattress. Snow also has a fair bit of “hug,” meaning you may find it harder to shift positions while you sleep.

Octave Horizon has a slightly higher (but still below average) bounce score of 3.8/10. Even with this lower score, you shouldn’t have any problem changing positions while you sleep, thanks to Octave’s responsive layer of Elastex® foam.

Cooling Features

Octave Horizon and Casper Snow both incorporate advanced cooling features to help ensure breathability and temperature balance for a good night’s sleep. However, some mattresses have more features than others.

Casper Snow earned a cooling features score of 7.3/10. This is due to its CoolTouch™ cover engineered with specialized cooling yarn, perforated foam, phase-change material, foil-covered HeatDelete™ bands, and individually pocketed spring coils.

However, Octave Horizon performed even better, with a cooling feature score of 8.7/10. Its cooling nanofibre cover, two layers of CopperGel™ infused memory foam for enhanced heat dissipation, aerated latex foam layer, breathable Elastex® foam layer, and support layer with air channels for enhanced airflow all contributed to this score. Compared to Casper Snow, Octave Horizon offers more cooling features for half the price.

Both Octave Horizon and Casper Snow promote a rejuvenating, comfortable sleep. Beyond that, however, Octave and Casper are two very different mattresses.

Octave Horizon is a memory foam and latex foam mattress made in Canada. It has 5 layers and stands 14″ tall. Horizon features advanced technologies like copper-infused memory foam with PolarMAX® phase-change material, aerated latex foam, ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, and body-contouring Elastex® foam.

Casper Snow is a hybrid mattress made in the United States. It has 5 layers and stands 12″ tall. Snow has individually wrapped pocket coils with dense foam around the edge for additional support. Its cooling features include perforated poly foam, phase-change material, and a top cover with cooling yarn.

Octave Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: Octave Horizon’s comfort layer is 2.5″ of CopperGel™ memory foam. Copper is an antimicrobial metal that promotes cleanliness in the mattress’s top layer for a fresh sleep surface. This layer is also enhanced with PolarMAX® phase-change material. The material reacts to your changing skin temperature to keep your body comfortable, letting you enjoy a deeper, more restorative sleep.
  • Layer 2: Horizon has a 1.5″ layer of aerated latex. This responsive foam layer contains hundreds of air vents, which allow for high ventilation and temperature control to maintain an optimal sleep environment while offering plenty of support.
  • Layer 3: This layer is 2″ of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam. This layer absorbs heat from the upper layers while contouring around your body to provide pressure-point relief and reduce muscle tension.
  • Layer 4: The mattress’s transition layer is 2″ of premium Elastex® foam. This proprietary material feels just like natural body-cushioning latex. It also adds extra bounce that helps you change positions more easily without disturbing your partner.
  • Layer 5: Octave Horizon’s support layer is 6″ of high-density support foam. It has five pressure-relief zones engineered to provide ergonomic support for your hips, back, and knees, providing proper spinal alignment and reducing pressure points. The foam also includes air channels for extra-cooling airflow.

Casper Snow Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer uses 1″ polyurethane foam, which uses Casper’s AirScape Technology to increase airflow. Casper doesn’t explain what this technology is or how it provides cooling benefits.
  • Layer 2: The second 1″ foam layer has zoned support and uses Casper’s HeatDelete Bands (which are made of metal foil) and phase-change material to help keep you cool as you sleep. While phase-change material is effective at temperature control, it’s not clear how the HeatDelete foil provides any cooling benefit.
  • Layer 3: The third (transition) layer uses denser 2″ foam to prevent you from feeling the coil layer beneath. This layer isn’t listed on the product page on Casper’s website.
  • Layer 4: The fourth (support) layer is made of 6.5″ individually pocketed flex coils, which are encased in a layer of dense foam around the edge. The support layer stops you from sinking too far into the mattress.
  • Layer 5: This 1″ bottom foam layer provides a foundation for the coil layer above and prevents the coils from damaging your foundation. This layer also isn’t listed on the product page on Casper’s website.

Casper manufactures its mattress covers using recycled polyester, upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra (spandex). Casper Snow’s cover also uses specialized cooling yarn. However, polyester and lycra aren’t known for being naturally breathable and often trap heat. The cooling yarn may help, but the other fabrics may limit its effectiveness.

Casper Snow’s cover is not removable or machine washable. Even though the mattress cover has a zipper, Casper strongly recommends not removing it for any reason. As a result, the mattress can only be spot-cleaned in case of stains and spills.

In comparison, Octave Horizon’s top cover is woven with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres. Horizon has the most cooling nanofibres of all the models in the Octave lineup. This means your sleep surface will feel refreshingly balanced while the mattress cover wicks away moisture from your body, keeping you at the ideal temperature to sleep deeply throughout the entire night.

Unlike Casper Snow, Octave Horizon has a top cover that’s removable and machine washable for easy cleaning.

Once opened and unrolled, your Octave or Casper mattress fully expands in a few minutes and is sleep-ready on delivery day.

Where you buy your Casper mattress will dictate whether you can return it at all. If you bought your mattress directly from Casper’s website or from a Sleep Store, you can return the mattress for a full refund. However, if you buy it from Sleep Country, there are no refunds—only a one-time exchange, minus an exchange fee of $65.
