Which Is Better: Juno or IKEA?

Balancing quality, value, and comfort can be challenging when shopping for a mattress. But it doesn’t always have to be. Juno and IKEA Valevag are both value mattress options available in Canada. But only Juno is Canadian-made, offers a longer 120-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty, and comes with a free build-your-own bedding bundle.

We consider Juno the best affordable mattress in Canada, and Juno owners seem to agree. The mattress has over 4,900+ 5-star reviews, and the company is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” on BBB. For just $499 for a queen size, Juno proves that you can achieve high-quality, Canadian-crafted comfort for a great price.

Mattress Breakdown

Comparing Juno vs IKEA Valevag, the Juno foam mattress stands out with its longer-than-average 120-night sleep trial, 15-year warranty, trusted online reputation, and incredible value. Juno also has above-average edge support and motion isolation. Paired with a layer of cooling gel foam for temperature regulation, Juno is well-suited for all types of sleepers.

IKEA Valevag is a hybrid mattress with zoned support and an unusually low level of bounce for an innerspring. Although this mattress leans towards the firmer end of medium-firm, you’ll experience some “sinking” into the top plush layer. IKEA Valevag comes with a shorter 90-night exchange period and a 10-year warranty.

Firmness

In independent, third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), IKEA Valevag’s medium-firm option scored 6.7/10 for firmness. This score places the mattress in the medium-firm category, so the mattress has the firmness level advertised. However, it’s definitely on the firmer end of the medium-firm category.

In comparison, Juno is a medium-firm mattress with a score of 6.0/10. It offers a well-rounded combination of support and comfort that feels like a warm, gentle hug with minimal sink. It will be suitable for all sleeping positions and provides a balanced feel.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses aren’t typically known for having good edge support, but Juno stands out with an excellent edge support score of 8.0/10. IKEA also performed well for edge support with a score of 8.3/10, which is more typical for a hybrid mattress with a foam encasement.

With either mattress, you’ll be able to sit or sleep comfortably on the edge of the bed and get up easily in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets. IKEA Valevag has better-than-average motion isolation at 7.4/10. This means you can expect to sleep soundly and not notice most movements from the other side of the mattress.

Juno also had an above-average motion isolation score of 6.2/10. You should experience minimal disturbance from any partners or pets, and be able to get a restful night’s sleep on either mattress.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. Low bounce is suitable for a more undisturbed sleep—especially if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken—while higher bounce is better if you often change sleep positions.

Foam mattresses often have high motion isolation scores, which results in low bounce ratings and typically means fewer sleep disruptions. Juno’s bounce score is slightly below average for a foam mattress at 2.5/10.

Hybrid mattresses tend to have higher bounce scores, as springs make for a responsive sleep. IKEA scored a 2.7/10 for bounce, which is unusually low for an innerspring mattress with a thick layer of coils.

Juno is a Canadian-made combination foam mattress, while IKEA Valevag is a hybrid mattress made in Mexico. With 2 layers of foam, Juno stands 8″ tall. IKEA Valevag, on the other hand, is 9.5″ tall with 3 layers. The bulk of IKEA Valevag’s height is its 6.5″ layer of pocketed coils.

Juno Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer consists of 2″ of full-body cooling gel foam, giving you contoured comfort and a cool night’s sleep. It has a foam density of 2.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The support layer is 6″ of total support foam, which makes the mattress feel firmer, provides extra edge support, and reduces motion transfer from the other side of the bed. Its foam density is 1.85 lb/ft³.

Juno’s tri-colour top cover is made from knit polyester and viscose. The cover isn’t removable and should be spot-cleaned only, although your Juno purchase will come with a free mattress protector to help protect it from spills and stains. Upgrade to the Juno Cool+ cover made with cooling yarn for even more temperature regulation.

IKEA Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer is 1.5″ of memory foam. This layer provides cushioning so you don’t feel the coils in the transition layer. Foam density: 1.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 6.5″ of pocketed coils. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk and provides a small amount of airflow.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 0.25″ of foam. This foam provides a foundation for the support layer, and insulates the mattress from the bedframe.

IKEA Valevag’s padded top cover makes up the remaining 1.25″ of the mattress’s total height, as its inner layers only add up to 8.25″. This cover isn’t removable or machine-washable, despite having a zipper. IKEA suggests using an upholstery shampoo to spot-clean the cover.

Free pickup and return, full refund

In-store return or exchange; full refund if unopened, exchange if opened

Juno and IKEA both ship their mattresses by ground using FedEx. While Juno delivers for free to most locations in Canada, IKEA’s contactless doorstep delivery starts at $39. You can also upgrade to in-home delivery starting at $59.

Both IKEA Valevag and Juno are wrapped in heavy-duty plastic upon delivery, but only Juno comes packaged in a cardboard box for extra protection and convenience. Once unrolled, Juno fully expands within a few minutes and is sleep-ready on delivery day. IKEA Valevag may need up to 72 hours to fully expand to its proper shape and size.

IKEA gives you 90 nights to test out your Valevag mattress, which is below the industry average. If you wish to return your mattress during this period, you’ll receive a one-time exchange, or in-store credit on an IKEA card. Your Valevag mattress is covered by a 10-year limited warranty.

Juno offers a 120-night sleep trial. You can return your mattress for a full refund during this period. Returned sleep-trial mattresses in good shape will be donated by Juno to local charities in need, or recycled by trusted recycling partners if donation isn’t possible. Juno also backs their products with a 15-year warranty.

When it comes to online reputation, IKEA is a well-known brand, but it has received negative customer feedback over the years. IKEA is rated “Bad” on Trustpilot, and “C-” (unaccredited) on BBB, with customers mentioning problems with customer service, confusing instructions, and delivery issues, among other frustrations.

In comparison, Juno has an excellent online reputation for product quality and customer care. The company is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” on BBB, with over 6,600+ on-site reviews from verified customers.
