Tempur-Pedic has a reputation for quality mattresses, but even their entry-level products come with a large price tag. Douglas, on the other hand, has an equally excellent reputation for quality at a much more affordable price. It also comes with superior motion isolation, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty.

This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored 5.5/10 for firmness. While TEMPUR-Cloud is marketed as having a medium feel, this rating places TEMPUR-Cloud at the lowest end of the medium-firm category. Despite being more firm, it has a good amount of “hug” in the top layer, which may make it difficult to change positions.
The Douglas Original is designed to be medium-firm, with a firmness score of 6.7/10. This balance makes it suitable for all sleep styles and preferred by many Canadians. The Douglas provides gentle contouring around your body with minimal sinking, offering a slightly firmer feel and less “hug.”
Foam mattresses often have low edge support. However, both Douglas and Tempur-Pedic scored well for edge support in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). Douglas scored 7.8/10, and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored 8.5/10. You can safely sit at the side or foot of either mattress without tumbling off. It should also be easy to get out of bed in the morning.
Foam mattresses usually offer better motion isolation than innerspring and hybrid mattresses. This means you should notice less movement from other areas of the mattress while you’re sleeping. Douglas scored very well for motion isolation with a 8.3/10, so you can expect a restful, undisturbed sleep.
Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, scored 4.6/10 for motion isolation. This is considerably lower than Douglas’s score—and lower than we would expect to see in a foam mattress, period. If you or your partner are a restless sleeper, Douglas is a better option for a good night’s rest.
Both Douglas and Tempur-Pedic have a low level of bounce, which is common for foam mattresses. Douglas scored 3.1/10 while Tempur-Pedic scored 3.6/10. These scores are very similar, so you might not notice a difference in bounce level. However, if you’d like as little bounce as possible, Douglas would be a better fit for your bedroom.
Foam can be known to trap heat, so most modern foam mattresses incorporate cooling features to help ensure breathability and airflow for comfortable sleep. Douglas achieves this by incorporating features such as a CoolSense® cover, ecoLight® cooling gel foam layer, and a layer of Elastex, a breathable latex-like foam. All these features earned Douglas a score of 4.2/10.
TEMPUR-Cloud, also a foam mattress, received a cooling features score of just 1.6/10. Despite being promoted as a cooling mattress, the company doesn’t explain exactly what those cooling technologies are. We could only identify two features: the top cover made with moisture-wicking fabric and a layer of pocket coils. These scores indicate you’re more likely to have a cooler and more comfortable sleep on a Douglas Original.

Tempur-Pedic doesn’t publicly share its layer measurements or foam densities. Douglas is more open with this information. The Douglas website states that foam density is 2.5 lb/ft³.
The sustainable Infinitex™ fibres in Douglas’s cover keep your sleep surface cool and dry. You can remove and machine-wash Douglas’s top cover to keep it fresh using the 360° zipper.
Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, has a polyester-and-spandex cover that isn’t removable or machine washable. This could be partly because TEMPUR-Cloud contains 23% “glass fiber” (fiberglass) in its internal fire sock netting. (We safely removed the cover for the purposes of this comparison but don’t recommend doing the same at home.) Instead of removing the cover, spot-clean the mattress carefully when it gets dirty.
