In addition, the company requires you to pay back any discounts before issuing returns. This is concerning because GhostBed’s “original” prices can be thousands of dollars more than the sale price.

Firmness

Despite being advertised as medium-firm, in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), GhostBed Classic scored 7.7/10 for firmness. This places GhostBed Classic in the firm category. This level of firmness is preferred by back sleepers and stomach sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper, you could find this mattress puts too much pressure on your shoulder and hip.

The Douglas received a score of 6.7/10, making it a true medium-firm mattress. This firmness level is ideal for all types of sleepers and offers a good balance of comfort and support.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses aren’t typically known for having high edge support. But both Douglas and GhostBed exceed expectations here. Douglas scored 7.8/10 for edge support, and GhostBed scored 9.0/10. With scores this high, you’ll be able to sit comfortably on the edge of either mattress, and you should have no difficulty getting up in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets when they decide to join you in bed. Douglas has an exceptionally high motion isolation score of 8.3/10. You can expect to sleep soundly and not notice any movements from the other side of the mattress.

GhostBed, on the other hand, has a lower motion isolation score of 5.2/10. It’s a good score, and you likely wouldn’t notice much movement with this mattress. Still, if you’re looking for exceptional motion isolation for the most undisturbed sleep, you should look at Douglas instead.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. Low bounce is a good thing if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken, while higher bounce is ideal if you have trouble changing sleep positions. Douglas scored 3.1/10—a score typical for all-foam mattresses.

GhostBed’s higher score of 4.6/10 could mean you’ll find it easy to change positions, but paired with its lower motion isolation score, you’ll also likely feel more movements from a partner or pet sharing the bed.

Foam mattresses can be known to trap heat, so many modern foam mattresses like Douglas Original and GhostBed Classic offer cooling features to help sleepers stay cool throughout the night.

GhostBed Classic earned a cooling features score of 3.7/10. This score is due to the mattress’s perforated latex foam and gel-infused foam layers that promote cooling and breathability.

The much more affordable Douglas Original earned a higher cooling feature score of 4.2/10. This is due to its moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover, layer of ecoLight® cooling gel foam, and layer of breathable Elastex® foam, all of which promote cooling and air circulation. With Douglas, you get better cooling features—all for a third of the price of GhostBed Classic.

Mattress Construction

Both Douglas and GhostBed are combination foam mattresses with 3 layers, including a layer of cooling gel foam.

Douglas Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
• Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
• Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

GhostBed Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: GhostBed Classic has a 1.5″ layer of aerated latex. The aeration allows airflow, which can help cool the surface. However, while latex offers natural breathability and bounce, some sleepers may find it doesn’t deliver the same deep contouring as memory foam, particularly for side sleepers who need significant pressure relief.
• Layer 2: The mattress’s second comfort layer is 2″ of gel memory foam. This layer is designed to offer a mixture of cooling and contouring. The gel is intended to help with heat dissipation, though gel-infused foam alone may not provide long-lasting cooling for those who sleep especially hot. This layer does offer good pressure-point relief, though, particularly for the shoulders and hips.
• Layer 3: GhostBed Classic’s support layer is 7.5″ of high-density foam, which serves as the mattress’s main support structure and adds durability.

When it comes to mattress composition, GhostBed doesn’t provide any information about its foam densities. Douglas is open about its mattress construction and foam densities of 2.5 lb/ft³.

Douglas’s cover design pays tribute to the brand’s Canadian roots with its red-and-white colour profile and mountainscape stitching. Made with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres, the stretch knit fabric is soft, breathable, and durable to help you sleep cool all night long. The top cover is removable and machine-washable.

GhostBed’s top cover is white, with raised circular stitching for added texture. The fabric is a soft, breathable blend of viscose and polyester. However, it’s important to note the cover is not machine-washable and can’t be removed. GhostBed recommends spot cleaning only.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Both Douglas and GhostBed ship by ground using FedEx. Your mattress is delivered directly to your door throughout most parts of Canada. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations. Including time taken to dispatch and deliver orders, Douglas ships from Ontario or Alberta in 2–10 business days, while GhostBed ships from Ontario or Quebec in 3–5 business days.

Douglas’s sleep trial is significantly longer at 365 nights, compared to GhostBed’s 101-night trial. Douglas gives you much more time to try your mattress at home. If you choose to return your mattress for a full refund, Douglas will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period, then donate your mattress to a local charity in your area. Just contact customer service to coordinate your return.

In addition to a shorter sleep trial, GhostBed has a far less straightforward return policy than Douglas, according to customer complaints. GhostBed has a “Bad” Trustpilot rating with numerous concerns about dishonoured sleep trial returns. Post on the r/Mattress subreddit express similar opinions. If you return your mattress during the sleep trial, GhostBed also requires you to pay back any discounts before issuing returns. Since GhostBed mattresses are often (if not always) “discounted,” this policy will likely apply to you.

Douglas and GhostBed both provide a 20-year mattress warranty. However, numerous reviews on GhostBed’s Better Business Bureau page complain of difficulties getting the company to honour warranty claims. This may be due in part to the restrictive warranty terms. For example, GhostBed’s non-removable mattress cover is only warrantied for one year, and any physical damage (including soiling) will void the entire warranty.
