Firmness

Some people think of foam mattresses as having a “sinking” feeling compared to innerspring mattresses, but that’s not the case with Douglas. Douglas mattresses have a medium-firm feel that’s ideal for all sleep styles. However, there are slight differences in the different models.

Douglas Original and Douglas Summit both scored 6.7/10 for firmness, putting these mattresses on the firmer end of medium-firm. However, Summit offers better pressure-point relief due to its thicker foam layers. While both Original and Summit are suitable for all sleep styles, you may prefer them over Alpine if you sleep on your back or stomach.

Douglas Alpine, in comparison, scored 6.1/10 for firmness, putting it on the softer end of medium-firm. If you sleep mostly on your side, you might find you sleep a little more comfortably on Alpine.

Edge Support

Although foam mattresses aren’t generally known for having great edge support, Douglas mattresses have earned that reputation.

Douglas Original has an edge support score of 7.8/10, while Douglas Alpine scored 6.8/10. Douglas Summit received the highest edge support score of the threeat 7.5/10.

No matter which mattress you choose, you can sit on the edge of the mattress or sleep farther away from the middle without sinking into the sidewalls. That said, if you’re looking for the best edge support in a Douglas mattress, Summit is your best bet.

Motion Isolation

Foam mattresses generally have good motion isolation, but Douglas mattresses have some of the best motion isolation scores of any mattress brand we’ve ever tested. This is important if you share your bed with a partner or are a light sleeper who wakes up easily.

Douglas Original has a motion isolation score of 7.8/10, and Douglas Alpine scores even higher at 6.8/10. Douglas Summit has the highest motion isolation score of all three mattresses at 7.5/10. In fact, this is the highest score of any mattress we’ve ever tested.

No matter which Douglas mattress you choose, you can rest easy knowing that you won’t be disturbed by movement from the other side of the bed.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of preference, but lower bounce scores mean a more consistent sleep surface. Douglas Original earned a bounce score of 3.1/10, and Douglas Alpine scored slightly higher at 3.6/10. Douglas Summit has the lowest bounce score of all three mattresses at 3.0/10.

Despite these low bounce scores, you shouldn’t have any trouble changing position. All three mattresses incorporate a layer of responsive Elastex® foam for a little extra spring to help you get up in the morning.

Cooling Features

Douglas Original earned a cooling features score of 4.2/10. This is due to its moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover, a layer of heat-dissipating ecoLight® cooling gel foam, and a layer of breathable Elastex® foam. Douglas Alpine scored higher at 5.1/10, having the same cooling features as Douglas Original as well as phase-change material for triple-action cooling.

Douglas Summit earned the highest cooling features score of all three mattresses at 5.4/10. It includes all the cooling features of Original and Alpine, but also incorporates CryoFusion® cooling nanofibers in its top cover for even more active heat dissipation.

All Douglas mattresses are combination foam mattresses with 3 interior layers. Douglas Original stands 10″ tall. Douglas Alpine is slightly taller at 11″, while Douglas Summit is the tallest model at 12″. All three options feature machine-washable covers to help keep your sleep environment clean and fresh.

Douglas Original Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
  • Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
  • Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

Douglas Original’s CoolSense® cover is made of polyester, spandex, and plant-based Infinitex™ fibres that actively draw moisture away from your body while you’re sleeping.

Douglas Alpine Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer includes 2.25″ of ecoLight® cooling gel foam to keep your body heat down. This layer is also equipped with Polar® Temperature Balancing, which further controls nighttime temperatures by absorbing your extra body heat during warmer nights and redistributing it on colder nights. Foam density: 2.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer features 2.25″ of resilient, supportive Elastex® foam. This foam is similar to latex, but it can be more comfortable if you have a latex allergy. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 3: The support layer is 6.5″ of motion-isolation foam. This layer makes up more than half of Douglas Alpine’s overall height—and helps eliminate nearly all disruptive movement across the mattress. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.

In addition to the moisture-wicking cover, cooling gel foam, and responsive Elastex® foam of Douglas Original, Douglas Alpine’s comfort layer incorporates phase-change material for even more temperature balance.

Douglas Summit Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer features 2.5″ ecoLight® cooling gel foam, which is lighter, more durable, and more eco-friendly than traditional memory foam. It effectively dissipates heat and improves air circulation. This layer is enhanced by Polar® Temperature Balancing, a phase-change material that regulates mattress temperature. Foam density: 2.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is 2.5″ of Elastex® foam. This offers both springiness and support, similar to the way many mattresses use latex. But unlike latex, this foam is free from allergy-triggering chemicals. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 3: The support layer, which makes up half of the mattress’s overall height, is 7″ of motion-isolation foam. Designed to provide exceptional motion isolation support, it virtually eliminates any transfer of movement from the other side of the bed. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.

Douglas Summit features all the advanced cooling technologies used in Douglas Original and Douglas Alpine, but also adds cooling nanofibres into the top cover. These plant-based fibres draw heat away from your body while you sleep, creating a cool-to-the-touch sleep surface. Summit also has the thickest foam layers, offering more motion isolation and pressure-point relief.

Douglas ships by ground using FedEx. Shipping is free to most parts of Canada, though additional fees may apply if you live in a remote area. You can expect your mattress to arrive on your doorstep in 2–10 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. Your order will ship from Ontario or Alberta.

Douglas mattresses arrive rolled and compressed in a cardboard box, and will be wrapped in two sheets of heavy-duty plastic. They expand to their full height in a matter of minutes after being unboxed and unrolled. You can sleep on your Douglas mattress the same day it’s delivered.

Douglas mattresses come with a generous 365-night sleep trial—one of the longest in the industry—and a 20-year warranty. If you decide to return your mattress during the sleep trial, the company will pick the mattress up for free and issue a full refund. Your returned mattress will be donated to a local charity or recycled, depending on the options available in your area.
