Douglas Original is also priced lower at just $799 for a queen size, compared to $1,199 for Bloom Cloud.

Firmness

Bloom Cloud is advertised as having a medium feel, while Douglas Original is a medium-firm mattress. A medium-firm feel is preferred by many mattress shoppers and is ideal for all sleep styles, whether you prefer to sleep on your side, back, or stomach.

Edge Support

Good edge support allows you to sit comfortable on the edge of a mattress or lie farther away from the middle. Douglas Original earned a very good edge support score of 7.8/10, while Bloom Cloud scored lower at 5.7/10.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets. Douglas Original has an excellent motion isolation score of 8.3/10, while Bloom Cloud scored an above-average 6.8/10. You shouldn’t notice much movement from the other side of the bed with either mattress, but it’s worth noting Douglas Original’s higher score.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. Low bounce is a good thing if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken, while higher bounce is ideal if you often change sleep positions. Both Bloom and Douglas scored below average for bounce. This is typical for all-foam mattresses. Bloom Cloud earned a bounce score of 3.3/10, while Douglas scored slightly lower at 3.1/10.

Cooling Features

Douglas Original and Bloom Cloud both offer cooling features to help sleepers stay comfortable throughout the night. Bloom Cloud earned a cooling feature score of 4.4/10. This is due to its organic cotton cover with copper infusion, gel-infused foam, synthetic latex foam, and aerated foam layers.

Douglas Original earned a slightly lower cooling feature score of 4.2/10. This is due to its moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover, layer of ecoLight® cooling gel foam, and layer of breathable Elastex® foam, all of which promote cooling and air circulation.

Douglas Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam. This layer also has open-cell construction for extra breathability.
  • Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This is a latex-free foam with a similar level of responsiveness and support.
  • Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

Douglas Original’s cover design pays homage to the brand’s Canadian roots, with its red-and-white colour profile and mountainscape stitching. Made with moisture-wicking, plant-based Infinitex™ fibres, the CoolSense® top cover features a stretch knit fabric that’s soft, breathable, and durable to help you sleep cool. Best of all, the cover is removable and machine washable.

Bloom Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top layer is 1″ of aerated gel memory foam. This initial layer contours around your body, relieves pressure points, and allows for airflow while you sleep.
  • Layer 2: This layer is 1″ of gel memory foam and synthetic latex foam, split into three sections to provide zoned support. The softer memory foam is at the head and foot of the mattress to support lighter areas of the body. In the centre, the firmer latex foam adds extra support for your lower back and hips.
  • Layer 3: The transition layer is 1″ of memory foam. This provides extra contouring for your body and accounts for Bloom Cloud’s good motion isolation score.
  • Layer 4: The support layer is 7.5″ of support foam. This foundational layer prevents your body from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

Bloom Cloud’s white top cover is removable and machine washable. This organic cotton cover is also infused with copper, which is advertised to help the mattress stay fresh and odourless. The mattress interior contains a rayon fire sock to meet fire safety regulations.

Douglas

Douglas ships by ground using FedEx. Your order is sent from Ontario or Alberta and is delivered to your door in 2–10 business days, including time taken to dispatch your order. Additional fees and shipping timelines may apply if you live in a remote area. The mattress arrives rolled up in a box.

Douglas gives you a 365-night sleep trial to try out the mattress at home. If you choose to return your mattress, Douglas will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period and issue a full refund. Just contact customer service to coordinate your return. The mattress is also covered by a 20-year warranty.

Bloom

Bloom ships via Sleep Country Canada in major metro areas, arriving 3–10 business days after it’s been ordered. The company also uses UPS and FedEx for other areas, and Canada Post in remote areas where other couriers don’t deliver. Sleep Country doesn’t have stores in the Territories and Newfoundland/Labrador; if you live in these areas, expect to pay an extra $120 delivery fee and wait 7–10 business days for your order to arrive. The mattress arrives rolled up in a box.

Bloom has a shorter trial period than Douglas, just the industry-standard 100 nights. There are no refunds, only exchanges for store credit (minus a $65 exchange fee). If you exchange Bloom for a more expensive mattress, you’ll need to pay the difference. Bloom also provides an industry-standard 10-year mattress warranty.
