What is the best memory foam mattress in Canada?

Octave Vista is the best Canadian memory foam mattress, according to our rating system that factors in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). Priced at just $899 for a queen size, Octave earned this top spot on our list thanks to its advanced cooling and comfort features, zoned support, 365-night sleep trial, 15-year warranty, and free bedding bundle with purchase.

Octave Vista Mattress

Our expert mattress testers chose the Octave Vista mattress as the Best Memory Foam Mattress in Canada.

Memory foam, otherwise known as viscoelastic polyurethane foam, was originally developed by NASA for use in aircraft cushions. It has a distinctive slow responsiveness—that is, your body slowly sinks into its surface—and it’s known for its body-contouring properties. Memory foam is a popular choice for mattress materials and is often combined with other premium features, like cooling and zoned support.

Keep reading to discover our selection of the best memory foam mattresses based on factors like price, performance, sleep trial and warranty length, and more.

Standard Bed-In-a-Box With Upgrade Fees

The S&S Mattress is an updated version of the company’s first mattress, Silk & Snow Original. This memory foam mattress is available in two firmness options: firm and medium-firm. The medium-firm option we purchased for this review is priced at $800 for a queen size. It’s available through the Silk & Snow website and at Sleep Country.

The firm option is priced lower at $700 for a queen size. This means you’re paying an extra $100 for a mattress that fits all sleep styles, but the only difference is an extra layer of foam. The mattress also lacks cooling features found in competitor mattresses like Douglas Original, meaning you could notice overheating while sleeping on The S&S mattress.

Silk & Snow has limited customer reviews and a very good star rating for the S&S Mattress on its website. However, this doesn’t match feedback shared on third-party review sites like Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot. Customers have reported significant issues with product quality, warranty claims, and returns, as well as difficulty contacting customer service.

Decent Memory Foam Mattress, Poor Service Reviews

Emma Original is a memory foam mattress that comes in a single medium firmness. The Emma website advertises that it’s made in the US, but the label on the mattress we purchased says it was made in Mexico.

Although Emma’s website has thousands of customer reviews mainly from Europe, there are fewer than 40 customer reviews from Canadian customers. Furthermore, consumer reviews on third-party websites like Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot raise concerns about the company’s customer service practices.

Flippable Mattress Costs More For Canadians

Layla Memory Foam is an all-foam mattress from the American company Layla Sleep. It features copper-infused cooling gel, a cooling cover, and a flippable design that lets you choose between “Soft” and “Firm” sleeping surfaces.

A queen-size Layla mattress costs $1,573 CAD (subject to USD exchange rates). However, Canadian customers end up paying even more due to a $250 USD non-refundable shipping fee. Layla’s website also doesn’t state a currency, so it’s not clear that you’re paying USD until after you’ve bought the mattress.

Compared to competing foam mattresses like Douglas, Layla’s 120-night sleep trial is only slightly above industry standard. And while a flippable firmness option is an interesting idea, the mattress’s performance per side isn’t different enough to justify the higher-than-average cost of this mattress.

Pricey Foam Mattress With Long Delivery Time

Amerisleep AS3 is an American-made mattress available in both foam and hybrid versions. (We purchased the foam version for this review.) It has above-average edge support, very good motion isolation, and some cooling technologies.

However, Amerisleep comes with few value-added features and only a 100-night sleep trial, which doesn’t balance out the higher-than-average price tag of $2,495 CAD for a queen size. The mattress also takes 10–15 business days to arrive, and there are import fees for shipping to Canada.

In comparison, competitor foam mattress Douglas Original is much more affordably priced at just $799 for a queen size. With a 365-night sleep trial, a machine-washable cover, more cooling features, and a free bedding bundle, Douglas offers more value for your money.

Expensive Foam Mattress With Average Features

Polysleep Zephyr is a medium-firm foam mattress from Polysleep. It’s also the most expensive option in the Polysleep lineup at $2,599 for a queen size.

Zephyr has a number of special features, including zoned support and a layer of antimicrobial foam. Still, we would expect to see more features at this price point. The mattress’s 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are only standard for the industry, and Polysleep only issues partial refunds if you decide to return your mattress.

Competing mattress Octave Horizon offers more features and value for a lower price. At $1,499 for a queen size, Horizon is meticulously crafted to give you a deeper, more restorative sleep experience. The mattress features advanced cooling technologies, five-zone ergonomic support, a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and hassle-free returns with a full refund.

As of February 2025, Polysleep Zephyr is no longer available through the company’s website. It’s only available for purchase in-store at individual third-party retailers. Price, sleep trial, and return policies may vary by supplier.

Expensive Mid-range Foam Mattress

Puffy Lux is a mid-range memory foam mattress from American company Puffy. Featuring gel-infused foam, a lifetime warranty, and unspecified Climate Comfort™ technology, Puffy Lux also has very good edge support and above-average motion isolation.

However, apart from the gel foam and vague technology, the mattress has no other cooling features. It also lacks a machine-washable cover, and its sleep trial is only standard for the industry. According to the customer questions section of the company’s product page, the mattress’s fire sock contains fiberglass, which is a potential health hazard. And at $2,899 for a queen size, Puffy Lux is outside the budget of many Canadians.

In comparison, competing foam mattress Douglas Summit offers premium features for much less. At just $1,299 for a queen size, Summit has a machine-washable cooling nanofibre cover, cooling gel-infused foam, and phase-change material for perfect temperature balance. Your purchase also comes with a generous 365-night sleep trial and a free bedding bundle.

An Average Foam Mattress With No Refunds

Bloom Mist is a medium-firm foam mattress available only through Sleep Country. It features a layer of cooling gel foam, a layer of aerated charcoal-infused antimicrobial foam, and a machine-washable cover.

At $799 for a queen size, Bloom Mist is the mid-range option in the Bloom mattress lineup. However, this mattress falls within the higher end of the budget market, and its 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are only standard for the industry. Returning the mattress after purchase also means dealing with Sleep Country’s exchange-only policy.

In comparison, competitor mattress Juno offers similar features for a much lower price. At just $499 for a queen size, Juno comes with a 120-night sleep trial, 15-year warranty, full refunds with free return pickup, and a free bedding bundle.

Memory Foam Mattress with No Cooling Features

The Casper is an American-made memory foam mattress made by mattress company Casper. It replaced the Casper Original mattress in 2023. Although it’s positioned as Casper’s budget option, The Casper mattress retails at $1,499 for a queen size. It also comes with an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty.

Compared to competing brands like Douglas, The Casper comes with a shorter trial and warranty for a higher price tag. It also doesn’t offer the advanced cooling features you might expect to see for that price—meaning Casper may not provide the value and cooling comfort you’re looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best cooling memory foam mattress?

According to third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), memory foam mattress Octave Vista is the best cooling mattress. Historically, memory foam has been known to trap heat due to its dense composition. However, brands like Octave are merging memory foam with advanced cooling technologies to ensure temperature-regulated sleep.

Octave Vista’s cooling features include a nanofibre cover, copper-infused memory foam that draws excess heat away from your body, responsive Elastex® foam for breathability, and a zoned support layer with air channels to promote airflow. Upgrading to Octave Mirage or Octave Horizon will give you even more cooling features, like latex foam and cooling gel foam.

What is the best affordable memory foam mattress?

The best affordable memory foam mattress is Octave Vista. Octave offers a variety of features for restorative sleep, like advanced cooling and zoned support, at the accessible price of just $899 for a queen size. Your purchase also comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle that includes a mattress protector, pillow(s), sheets, and pillow protector(s).

What is the best base for a memory foam mattress?

Because memory foam is a dense material, you should ensure you’re using a strong and sturdy mattress base that can support its extra weight. To avoid any premature mattress sagging or sinking, steer clear of using bases with wire or metal frames. Instead, opt for a mattress base or boxspring with wide wooden slats, or an adjustable bed. Read your mattress warranty to learn which types of bases are compatible.

Just like mattresses, boxsprings and bases get worn out, too. When buying your new memory foam mattress, consider replacing your foundation if it’s more than 10–15 years old, or if you notice any dips or sags in its shape.

Are memory foam mattresses good?

Memory foam mattresses are a good choice for sleepers looking for a mattress with some “sink” and a good amount of body contouring. If you experience pressure points, you may benefit from a memory foam mattress as the slow-moving surface provides cushioning for your shoulders and hips without compromising on support.

However, if you don’t enjoy that “sinking” feeling, you may prefer poly foam mattresses, which are a little more responsive.

How long do memory foam mattresses last?

A memory foam mattress should last about 7–10 years on average with normal usage and proper care. If your mattress is backed by a warranty, you may be able to use it up until the warranty’s end. (For reference, Octave Vista has a 15-year warranty. You should be able to enjoy it for that long.)

READ MORE: How long should a mattress last?

How do you clean a memory foam mattress?

Clean your mattress once every 6 months by gently spot-cleaning any stains with an enzyme-based mattress cleaner. You shouldn’t use water on a memory foam mattress, as its highly absorbent nature makes moisture retention and mold growth a risk.

Having a mattress with a removable and machine-washable cover, like Octave, is a good way to remove stains and prevent lingering odours. You can also pair your mattress with a mattress protector for easier maintenance.

What are the different types of mattresses?

Mattresses fall into many different categories. Each has different characteristics that are a good fit for a variety of sleep styles. Here are just a few types of mattresses:

  • Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses like Logan & Cove combine innerspring layers with foam or latex for a perfect pairing of contour and support. They tend to have better edge support and lower temperatures than memory foam, but this comes with reduced motion isolation for a slightly less peaceful sleep. (Shopping for a hybrid? Check out our list of the best hybrid mattresses.)
  • Cooling Gel Foam: Some sleepers find normal memory foam too hot, so cooling gel foam mattresses like Douglas can be a great alternative. This type of mattress combines memory foam with cooling gel to keep temperatures comfortable while you sleep.
  • Innerspring: Innerspring mattresses support your weight with metal coils. This makes the mattress bouncy and provides good edge support, but you might find this type of mattress less comfortable if your body needs more contouring.
  • Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses like Octave “hug” your body to relieve pressure and keep your spine aligned. They often incorporate zoned support, which can help relieve sore joints and provide other health benefits. In fact, the brand states that 86% of customers suffering from back pain said Octave helped reduce their pain.
  • Latex: Natural or synthetic latex mattresses can relieve pressure in any sleep position. They have a reputation for comfortable temperatures and can last longer than other types of mattresses. However, latex mattresses can also be more expensive and may not be ideal for some people with latex allergies.

What should I look for when choosing a mattress?

When you’re choosing a mattress, it’s important to consider more than just how comfortable it is. There are a whole range of factors to keep in mind, which we list below. (And when you’re ready to buy, make sure you buy a mattress online vs. in store.)

  • Budget: Set a budget for your new mattress and stick to it. You might even be able to make this budget go further by finding limited-time deals and promotions online.
  • Construction: Figure out what type of mattress you want, whether it’s foam, hybrid, or innerspring. There are pros and cons for each construction style, and knowing what you want will help narrow down your options.
  • Firmness: Choose a mattress with the right firmness level for your sleep style—that is, whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. For example, side sleepers often want a softer mattress, while back sleepers may prefer something firmer. (Did you know that a medium-firm feel is ideal for most sleep styles? Get our guide to the best medium-firm mattresses.)
  • Pressure-Point Relief: Got achy joints? How about a sore back? If you do, look for a mattress with enhanced pressure-point relief so you sleep better at night. Octave Vista comes with five body-contouring support zones to aid in your body’s natural recovery and help you wake up pain-free the next day.
  • Motion Isolation: Pay close attention to motion isolation if you share your bed with a partner, kids, or pets. The higher the isolation score, the less you’ll notice movement from the other side of the bed.
  • Edge Support: Are you in the habit of sitting or sleeping near the edge of the bed? Look for a mattress with good edge support so you feel supported in any position.
  • Bounce: If you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, you might prefer a mattress with extra bounce. (Your inner child will enjoy it, too!)
  • Contouring: Contouring materials like memory foam help support your body in all the right places. That said, too much “hug” can cause overheating and make it hard to move, so find the level of contouring that’s best for your body.
  • Temperature: Speaking of overheating—if you’re a warm sleeper, look for a mattress that promotes airflow and reduces heat. Look for a mattress with cooling gel foam and other cooling technologies.
  • Responsiveness: A responsive mattress allows you to change positions without feeling stuck. Often found in hybrid designs, a responsive mattress can help you enjoy certain activities in bed even more.
  • Noise: Nobody likes a squeaky or crinkly mattress. Get a quiet night’s sleep with a mattress made from noise-quieting materials like foam or latex.
  • Company Policies: Get details about the manufacturer’s sleep trial, return policy, and product warranty so you know what you’re getting into.
