Tuft & Needle Original is a Canadian-made all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel. While reasonably priced at $649 for a queen size, this mattress has just 2 foam layers and lacks useful benefits like a machine-washable cover or cooling features.
Tuft & Needle used to be available through Sleep Country but is now exclusively carried by Costco. It’s only available for purchase online, which requires a paid Costco membership. And because it’s only sold through Costco in Canada, Tuft & Needle doesn’t come with a sleep trial. Instead you receive Costco’s return policy, along with the manufacturer’s 10-year warranty.
In comparison, other foam mattresses like Douglas offer more value with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty. But Tuft & Needle’s limited features and restrictive policies mean the mattress just doesn’t provide enough value for the cost.

10Tuft & Needle Original is a 9.5″ all-foam mattress. The mattress is described as firm on the Tuft & Needle website. However, third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us) showed that the mattress is medium-firm—and just barely above a medium. Tuft & Needle Original has very good edge support but below-average motion isolation, which is unusual for a foam mattress.
The mattress contains just 2 foam layers. The top layer contains graphite and gel foam to provide cooling, but these are the only cooling features. The plush cover, made of micro-polyamide and polyester, isn’t machine washable and must be spot-cleaned only.
Tuft & Needle Original seems to fall short in quality, according to customer reviews. Some customers who purchased the mattress through Amazon have complained that the mattress sags and degrades within a few years of purchase. Others say that the mattress traps heat or has caused them back pain.
In comparison, competing all-foam mattress Douglas costs just $799 for a queen size. It comes with cooling features, a machine-washable cover, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty. Douglas has 21,000+ five-star reviews, and the company is rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.

The Zinus Green Tea memory foam mattress is manufactured in China. It’s available in Canada via online and in-store third-party retailers. Prices vary by individual retailer, but Amazon Canada currently sells Zinus Green Tea at $320 for a queen size.
This Zinus mattress review is for the 12″ model. Its main selling point is a layer of proprietary BioFoam, infused with green tea and charcoal. This gives the mattress excellent motion isolation, but it still has poor edge support and very little bounce. Zinus only offers a 10-year warranty, and the manufacturer doesn’t offer a sleep trial in Canada.

10The Zinus Green Tea memory foam mattress is 12″ thick and has 3 foam layers. On the manufacturer website, the product page describes these layers as having a “supportive feel” meant to cradle your joints and align your spine. Its top layer is noted for its green tea and “ActivCharcoal” charcoal infusions, which are meant to keep this mattress feeling fresh.
Zinus Green Tea has excellent motion isolation, but very little bounce and comparatively poor edge support. It also has a very soft feel for a comfortable but less supportive sleep. Some customers complain of back pain as a result.
Because this is a memory foam mattress, you may notice higher temperatures while you sleep—and Zinus doesn’t offer cooling features to balance out the heat. The mattress cover is also not machine-washable, and removing it could “harm the fire safety barrier,” according to Zinus’s website. This barrier is made of either fiberglass or a rayon-based fire retardant, depending on where and when you buy the mattress.
Zinus is only available in Canada through third-party retailers, so prices will vary depending on where you buy. At $320 for a queen size, Zinus Green Tea has a lower price point than many other memory foam mattresses. Zinus also offers a 10-year limited warranty, which is about standard.

10IKEA Haugesund is a hybrid mattress available in both firm and medium-firm options. We purchased the medium-firm option to review and still found it to be quite firm.
Haugesund is made up of three layers: top and bottom layers of comfortable polyurethane foam, with a thick layer of supportive pocketed coil springs in between. You should experience some cushioning when you lie down. The springs provide a high level of bounce, but you may or may not enjoy this level of responsiveness.
The innersprings are also surrounded by foam sidewalls, providing good edge support and structure. The top cover contains a soft fill and is not machine washable.

Although it’s affordably priced, Simmons Gel Memory Foam doesn’t come with an at-home sleep trial and only has an industry-standard 10-year warranty. Purchasing the mattress through Costco requires a paid membership, and there are several restrictions around shipping and returns.

10Simmons Gel Memory Foam is an 8″ foam mattress with a firm feel. It features 3 layers of foam, including a support layer that is relatively thin compared to other foam mattresses. This means that the mattress may offer minimal plushness and sink, limiting the amount of pressure-point relief and comfort.
It has excellent edge support and very good motion isolation, but very low bounce. Simmons Gel Memory Foam also lacks advanced cooling features and is only available in twin to queen size.
The mattress cover is made from a blend of 72% polyester and 28% micro-polyamide, a polymer-like microfiber that’s blended with elastane. The cover has a zipper, but the law label does not state whether or not the cover is machine washable. To avoid damaging the mattress cover, we recommend spot-cleaning it only.
In Canada, the mattress is available online via Costco and retailers like Amazon. If purchased from Costco, brand availability and pricing can vary depending on which Costco you shop at. Shipping time is longer than average for a bed-in-a-box mattress, which can be inconvenient if you need a new mattress quickly. You also need a paid Costco membership to buy a mattress there.

However, apart from a layer of cooling gel foam, Molblly lacks cooling features found in other affordable mattresses that help keep temperatures comfortable.
It’s unclear whether this is a genuine Canadian mattress. The mattress law label indicates that the product is made in Vietnam, while the Amazon page states that Molblly products are assembled in Canada. If you’re seeking an authentic Canadian mattress that is both made and assembled in Canada, you may want to consider Juno.
Molblly’s law label also doesn’t say whether the polyester mattress cover is machine washable. Just to be safe, we recommend spot-cleaning only.
The mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, which is standard for the mattress industry. However, Molblly doesn’t come with a sleep trial. Compared to competing budget-value mattresses like Juno, Lucid effectively has no sleep trial for Canadian shoppers who order through Amazon. Its warranty is also just the 10-year industry standard. Customer reviews often complain that the mattress sags and degrades (as seen here and here), or causes back pain (as seen here and here). Many more reviews also say the mattress has problems with mould (as seen here and here).
Other reviews report that Lucid failed to expand to its full height after unboxing (as seen here and here), which was the case with the mattress we ordered. This may have been due to a relatively long time spent in storage. According to the law label on the mattress we ordered, it was manufactured in April 2022—two years before we received it.

10Lucid Memory Foam is a foam mattress available in three firmness options: Plush, Medium, and Firm. It’s also available in heights of 6″, 8″, and 10″. We purchased the 10″ Medium version from Amazon for this review.
However, after unboxing it, our Lucid mattress only expanded to 8.5″ in height. This may be because the mattress spent a long time in storage before being shipped to us. (The law label indicates that the mattress we received was two years old at the time of shipping.) There was also a small, unidentifiable blue stain on the cover.
This mattress has above-average edge support for a foam mattress and excellent motion isolation. Third-party testing also showed that the mattress is somewhat firmer than the medium feel advertised. In fact, Lucid scored 5.5/10 for firmness in third-party engineer testing, placing it in the medium-firm category. This may be linked to our mattress’s failure to expand fully.
The mattress cover is made of polyester, rayon, and cotton. Although it has a zipper, the cover isn’t meant to be removed and isn’t machine washable.
Some customers have complained that Lucid Memory Foam doesn’t fully expand once unboxed (as seen here and here), or started to sag and degrade soon after purchase (as seen here and here)
. Other reviews say the mattress arrived with mould on the bottom cover or developed mould soon after delivery (as seen here and here). This potential health risk is extremely concerning for a company that’s already known for issues with fiberglass in its mattress construction (as seen here, here, and here).
In April 2024, we received an email from a customer who purchased a Lucid in 2019. Her Lucid mattress contained fiberglass, which leaked when the cover was opened. As a result, she experienced health and financial issues. The mattress we purchased for this review did not contain fiberglass, but it’s important to keep this issue in mind when considering a mattress.
